Help! I unearthed this piece from my pile of unknowns, who or what is it?

 Maybe someone can help with this one. I picked this up for barely nothing. It was matted and framed. I just took a chance. Someone felt it important enough to frame. The question-is this a signature? artwork? a different language? I even turned it sideways and it looks like a face? I hope its not a bad word in another language. Does anyone have an opinion.

It looks similar to some Arabic writing I have seen.
