It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman! Or is it?

Hello, I was interested in purchasing this signed George Reeves photo as I enjoyed The adventures of Superman as a child. However, being a novice in this area of collecting I was hoping to get some opinions as to it’s authenticity before taking the plunge. So any help would be appreciated by fellow collectors that know his signature pattern. Blessings, Mitch

Hopefully someone else will chime in. I believe there is a good possibility the photo was signed by George's mother.

Hello Joe, thanks for your reply in regards to the signature. I did find one that resembles it closely being sold by a company called Gallery of History. Aside from that it does differ from other examples I’ve looked at over the internet. Once again much thanks for your opinion. Am open to what others in the community have to say as well. I enjoyed the series, hence I wanted the item. But I don’t want a signature by his mother, secretary or just plain old forgery. Blessings, Mitch

Here is a discussion from several years ago which may help you. As you read through page 1 note the "authentic" Reeves signature(by Bob Shinn) and then later reply(by Superman fan) which clears up the analysis. I think you will see a strong resemblance of your signed photo with the signature in question.

Hi there Joe, thanks for the link to that conversation.i can see that George Reeves is quite a rarity and uncommon in original signed pieces. Was trying to ascertain when Christopher replies to Bob “Beautiful Pieces” after he saw the Reeves signed photos if he thought them as genuine? As the one I showed, looks very similar. I know Superman fan later remarked the postcard was signed by his mother, but he didn’t mention the two signed photos. Unless I’m assuming all three of the pieces shown by Bob were all indeed signed by mom Reeves? I certainly thank you for the education. I’m not taking a chance on purchase based on the difficulty in authenticating Reeves signature. Unless his mothers signature has any value to it, which I would think not, ha. Thanks again Joe for all the helpfulness to this novice. Mitch

Hopefully a few more will chime in. It's the "e" letters that lead me to believe it was not signed by George himself. All the other examples I can find the "e" letters are more rounded. Here is another link to PSA examples.

Yes, I see what you mean. The one in the example I have look like “r”s. While the photos you posted are much more rounded in Reeves signature. I’ve also noticed many of examples of his signature look much more messy and done in a swift hand. The example I have looks like it was done in a more tedious slow hand. I could be wrong on that, just going by some of what I’ve seen.

Hi Joe,

Your thoughts on this. It's fast.

I want to go on the record to say I do not consider myself well versed on Reeves signature although I will say this one has decent potential to be genuine. IMHO.
