Hi, I've been trying to get a real Billy Joel signed "Stranger" for some time. I bought one before, but others said the signature was fake. Does anyone know if this is real?
Is there anywhere to get a real one, perhaps for a bit less?
It looks like a typical rushed signature. I’d get a quick opinion from Epperson for $15 if I were you.
Thanks! I'm sorry -- I'm new. What is Epperson? Is it this https://rogerepperson.com/?
Roger Epperson is a music autograph expert. His website is www.signedsealeddel.com much like the other authenticators PSA, Beckett, he will offer an online opinion for a nominal fee ($15). You won’t get an actual COA but perhaps some piece of mind. Roger is very good with music.
honestly, for what most want on eBay uncertified, you’re best to just buy a PSA/DNA or Real! Certified piece. Generally, PSA and Epperson (owns Real) have been very good with Billy.
As Eric mentioned, he’s a fairly approachable guy and signs often.
I'd still seek external verification for any certified piece (PSA, BAS etc) - too many mistakes there. Don't buy blindly. Roger is very approachable and a cool guy. As mentioned previously, he does not have a Joel now - I looked for you.
I would wait for a better example. He is not rare.
+1
Where should I be looking other than eBay? Is there anywhere with a lot of autographs that are like guaranteed to be authentic?
are you on Facebook? There is a group there called RACC(all trusted sellers). If you join it, Im sure someone there knows. Also R&R Auctions. In fact they have one now.

These closed auction results from 2009 to 2018 at RR Auctions in NH will serve as a rough guide to what to expect to pay for the various types of items you might encounter in your search. It is a good idea to open a file and keep scans of the items, the certification, the sale date and price for reference. Remember the search is the fun and the more time spent looking the more likely you will achieve a great piece. There is no rush. Good luck!
Learning the signature and signing habits is the best way. It takes time. Knowing someone you can trust is helpful. Buying something certified by the Big 3 services will help to protect you but always seek additional opinions for authenticity and quality (contrast, fullness, placement etc). What was signed, where and with what will dictate value along with age and condition. And there are specialist dealers like Roger Epperson, who does not appear ro have any Joel at the moment. Auction houses are case by case.
In any event, from any source, always seek additional opinions. Roger will give his for $15. And of course, there are the good folk here. A lot of in person recent material is rushed - try to find a fuller example. It is worth the wait. Rushed/abbreviated is something to avoid IMO.
