MICKEY MANTLE AUTHENTIC EXEMPLARS... READ ALL ABOUT IT!

http://img850.imageshack.us/g/mickeymantle3.jpg/

I just wanted to post these here to see what Fudd the Lowly Mantle Collector can do to help stop the flood of forgeries into the market place. The goal is that we can all start educating ourselves before we buy. To see what a beautiful signature the Mick had, and to learn to distinguish it from the obvious forgeries at first glance. Something TTA, STAT, DREW MAX, GAI GLOBAL (Baker certs) & Christopher Morales can't seem to do....at all? You will almost never see a signature in this photo album collection that would match or come close to anything that has been certed by any of those guys. Maybe you'll find 1 in a 1000, but I haven't found 1 except the stickers that Morales pulled off to put his on in the JSA sting presented on Autograph Alert. To tell the difference between what an original hand signed Photo by the Mick looks like vs. an obvious Fake at first glance is easy. Give it a try. It's Fun!

As has been told many times, The Mick made more in one signing than his dad did in 1 year. He felt obligated to his fans to give them a "work of art". He did this by signing on just the right spot for the particular photograph he was presented. The size of his signature was determined by how big the sweet spot was. He knew EXACTLY how to fit his signature in so it looked perfect. A thing of beauty really. Please note that these are not all the same signature over and over, but merely a sample from my collection. Are any of them copies? Maybe, who knows, maybe I need Chris Morales for that? What I do know is that these are consistent with the WAY Mantle signed and structured his Autograph as we know it. Good luck! FUDD

I fully agree Fudd. If we want our hobby to prosper we all need to pitch in and clean up the trash.  I for one post warnings on craigslist everytime I see a forgery being offered up for sale. I use the same exact header and add READ FIRST. My reasoning is that whatever search word the "buyer" used to find the forgery ad will also show MY posting and the "READ FIRST" should get their attention.  It may also be helpful if each one of us FLAG these craigslist forgery postings. One person alone cant do it. It takes many so please everyone,  visit some CL sites in different cities and start flagging!

Also in your last paragraph Fudd, you are exactly right. Mick took his time and did it right. Years ago I was fortunate enough to obtain a ball signed by all of the 1952 American league All Stars except for rookie Mantle and the manager Casey Stengel. The sweet spot had been left open for Stengel but as he never signed it there it sat open all these years. Mantle did a show in Jersey about a year and a half before he passed away. And as I handed the ball across the table to him he carefully took it as though it was the crown jewels. he remarked " Hey Kid" ( I was in my forties then ) "where did you get this?" I told him about how no one else at the local auction recognized it for what it was. He told me I had a real nice find there and gently and carefully penned his signature right on the big ole sweet spot! Now the ball was complete. I had a treasure that has brought me great joy for many years thanks to Mick and his kind words and beautiful signature.

I agree Rhonda - I know the teams signed bats I have from them are holding up better than roaches.  If the signature fades on balls which happens more often than bats - does one attempt to "retrace" it with a sharpie?

came across this blurb on baseballs;

  • Medium blue Bic ballpoint pen -- the best is the old clear barrel stick pen. The ink seems to hold better than anything else. The first balls autographed were done with Sharpies, the ink stayed on well, but ink-bleed has occurred on some of them.
  • Ball -- although it would be nice to send official league baseballs, they can be costly. There are blemished baseballs from Rawlings. It doesn't say Official League ball on it, but they do have a very small mark near the number that shows it is a second. These wind up costing me about $3. each when buying by the case. The leather is the same as the official balls and holds the ink best. The autographs on these balls might not be "worth" as much as on an Official League ball but if you are sending out for signatures it is less expensive than OLBs

As much as Steiner costs, their autographs should survive as well as roaches do ! Lol

Another thing to bear in mind is flourescent lighting has much higher UV than standard incandesant lighting.
