They have that option for both quick opinions and send-ins. They have issued a result of “Unable render and opinion” for items they’ve examined in person.

I do not deal with authentication companies much and did not even know this option existed.. especially for send ins... they have 1 job.... their entire business is based on doing this 1 job.. thats wrinkling my brain...

Sorry, PSA actually uses “Inconclusive” for send-ins and “Unable to render an opinion” for Quick Opinions.

I can see if the signature was cut in half and you are missing the 2nd half of the signature and they are trying to authenticate based on only part of an autograph.. or similar cases with smudges or whatever.. but how can they not give an opinion an a clear complete signature?

Anyways, Dobby Doberson, was this Ringo signature a PSA quick opinion that failed? You just received this back from Beckett right? If its a quick opinion. Id say send it in.. just like the elton fiasco, they may need to see this in person to authenticate

I think the entire business is based on making money first. They have shareholders. Your interests are probably secondary at best. But that spot might be occupied by "Keep the brand safe"

I learned a lesson early in my collecting days.

There are autographs that are clearly real, ones that are clearly fake, and then a gray area that includes bad examples of authentic signatures and really good forgeries.

Since the two types in the gray area can't be reliably differentiated, they all get rejected.  That is the only way to protect the integrity of the authenticated ones.

I for one am glad to see these companies air on the side of caution.   If I were browsing ebay and saw a Ringo cut signed crisply and boldly signed on a sheet/cut I would assume it was fake....no matter how good it looked.

Also, this company saying they are gonna send lawyers after PSA is ridiculous.  They are rendering an opinion.  Doesn't matter if it is correct or not....its their professional opinion.   Is the autograph good?  Probably.

OP should have sent the whole book and got a full letter cert and then cut it out.   They have to air on the side of caution and I am glad they do

There are a lot of people out there who love cuts.. it goes back to my Taupin thread. There is absolutely a market for cuts. Some people prefer to be able to have an autograph on display.. it may take away value. But there are so many different types of collectors out there that I can see cuts being made.. especially if the book was damaged.. cuts exist and I look for them.. the problem is wading thru 99.9% of the fake index cards and other "cuts" out there to find one. You make a good point though, its hard work and easier to just assume they are all fake.. but they are for sure out there.

Also, the err on the side of caution... an autograph is either real or fake... period..

Until very recently half the Gleasons on the PSA Facts page were stupid forgeries from Cummings, Georgia and a secretarial by Sydell Spear which was identified as a bad style in 2012. Half of what they had was no good. I would not place much trust in these services. Thankfully they went over my materials and removed the bad Gleasons..

I thought about sending the book in before cutting it out, but my whole intent was to have the autograph encapsulated.... I would've had to re-mail the cut out back to Beckett (Which would've taken 8 months total with your current turnaround times).

I guess hindsight is 20/20, but I've never had an issue like this before. Another reason I thought this would be an easy authentication is the page the autograph is on is extremely unique and difficult to copy and not just a blank sheet of paper.

Question, does sending in proof of purchase convince Beckett or psa that it’s really authentic, or they don’t care about that.

I sent them that after the fact and they didn't want to answer my questions... Only said, they would re-evaluate when I paid the fee again. I understand it's a business, but it's bad business when they clearly didn't do their research the first time. (This particular order cost me $1,600 with all of the stuff I sent them, mostly because of this great forum :D)
