A message posted by Bob Dylan to his Facebook account

To my fans and followers,

I’ve been made aware that there’s some controversy about signatures on some of my recent artwork prints and on a limited-edition of Philosophy Of Modern Song. I’ve hand-signed each and every art print over the years, and there’s never been a problem.
However, in 2019 I had a bad case of vertigo and it continued into the pandemic years. It takes a crew of five working in close quarters with me to help enable these signing sessions, and we could not find a safe and workable way to complete what I needed to do while the virus was raging. So, during the pandemic, it was impossible to sign anything and the vertigo didn’t help. With contractual deadlines looming, the idea of using an auto-pen was suggested to me, along with the assurance that this kind of thing is done ‘all the time’ in the art and literary worlds.
Using a machine was an error in judgment and I want to rectify it immediately. I’m working with Simon & Schuster and my gallery partners to do just that.

With my deepest regrets,
Bob Dylan

Some users have uncovered potential autopen use within Bob Dylan's expensive art prints. Please check your prints if you own one and post a picture on this thread if you have any concerns.

*UPDATE -  Let this be a warning to ALL publishers and celebrities in the future. We are sick and tired of these autopen releases. Our community has had enough and absolutely will not stand for this practice to continue any longer!!!

I want to point out that Coles Books needs to be commended. They made sure to look out for their customers and refused to ship these out if they came from the same S&S stock, which they did. It was also an easy process to cancel orders beforehand if you wished. Coles. on behalf of everyone, I want to thank you for having integrity and watching out for all of us.

I can NOT say the same about Premiere Collectibles. They refused to honor cancelation requests until it was known these books were in fact autopenned. They advertise themselves claiming they are collectors themselves. This is not true. They are a retailer first and only care about your money. There have been other autopen incidents where they absolutely refused to accept blame, stating items were real when they were clearly deemed autopen by the community. Be careful with future purchases with Premiere Collectibles.

This email came directly from Jonathan Karp at Simon and Schuster. If anyone still wishes to send him a message, here is his email address as well.

jonathan.karp@simonandschuster.com

We apologize for the mistake that was made and are offering a full refund of your purchase.  Please keep your copy of The Philosophy of Modern Song at no cost. We hope you will enjoy reading it.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Karp

ORIGINAL POST

I am creating this thread as a comprehensive all in 1 link for returns, refunds, chargebacks and claims made regarding the "signed" edition of Bob Dylan - The Philosophy Of Modern Song. Please use this link to email Simon & Schuster, Coles, and Premiere Collectables as 100% proof these were signed using an autopen machine.

I would like to say right off the bat, Coles Books in the UK is handling this professionally and seem to care deeply about their customer base. They have stated that, once they are in hand, If they find evidence of them being autopenned, they will cancel all orders.. Kudos to Coles.. I wish all retailers would follow their lead. If you wish to cancel your order with them immediately instead of waiting, It seems to be an easy process.

This post will be continuously updated with new information over the next few days

Please refer to this article for the time being until more information is added

Here is the post I created a few weeks ago with info regarding the Indigo incident.

https://live.autographmagazine.com/forum/topics/indigo-bob-dylan-po...

So far, there have been a total of 17 confirmed different templates for the autopen machine used for Bob Dylans signature. I am in the process of creating video comparisons for all 17 sets. Please post full page photos of your item as they are delivered to aid in this process

Here are all 17 templates used by Bob Dylan - I am still looking for full page photos for numbers 8,13 and 15 thru 17 but its still best to post whatever you receive

Be aware when checking against your own copy, it has come to light that they are possibly using 1st and last names interchangeably. Bob in #2 matches perfectly with Bob in #13 while Dylan in both are different

14th variation confirmed

15th variation

16th variation - Seems to be almost an exact combination of #11 and #13 with a different vertical line in his "D"

17th variation

Dolly Parton is also guilty of using multiple autopens in the same fashion with multiple templates over the years but with a slight twist where they manipulate the page as the autopen machine writes her signature. If we are looking to stop all future attempts at autopen usage, she needs to be held accountable just as much as Bob Dylan and S&S. Link to threads below

Here is a great example provided by Eric Keith Longo

Lars, you might have a case after all. I think the fact that Dylan used so many variant signatures shows a willful attempt to conceal, and evidence of intent. Of course, his attorney written apology was intended to show that he believed what he was doing was ok. It was a weak argument, but you have a personality of high regard like Dylan, and he gets a pass. But the issue of the obvious attempt to conceal is really good evidence of intent, which is key in making a successful prosecution. I hadn't thought of that when I stated that there was no proof of intent. There is!!!

I Believe now that the publisher S&S was not aware at all, but they blindly put trust in what they were told by Dylan's team which still carries partial blame. This is on Dylan, however, publishers do need to be aware of this practice for future releases. Maybe change wording in their contracts to make sure autopens can not be used without harsh repercussions and legal action?... Triple check these signatures before a COA is made and the books are bound, and take a few pictures of the celebrity signing for extra publicity. Just a thought..

The publisher knew. Indigo knew they pulled the books in Canada then they resold the same books here in the USA. They knew

can’t convince me on that one lol

True Indigo pulled it first, but did they give S&S a reason to look into this further before a 2nd release with new retailers? I dont believe they did based on their initial stance adamantly standing behind their statement of being hand signed along with their COA. If this was a $50 book, I could see it.. for $600, that is an insane gamble to release a 2nd time if they were fully aware of the backlash caused by Indigo. This is pretty much why I believe S&S was in the dark but you very well could be right. If Dylan thought he could get away with it, why not S&S as well?

Yes. That’s how it got by the gallery

Dylan's call to Simon & Schuster's Jonathan Karp: "Hey man, I'm really sorry about all this. I take the blame. My next book's proceeds will all go to you.. I owe you, man"

Dylan's call to Castle: "Hey man, I'm really sorry about all this. I take the blame. My next edition's proceeds will all go to you. I owe you, man"

Then he goes to another publisher and another gallery.......

I got yet another call from Castle today, haha. I was told again to sit tight and a team will call me to take care of my issue. I didn't call/message them since their last phone call to me, so I'm not sure what's going on out there as far as communication. As of now all I know is my print is a confirmed fake - which I've known for a week now.

More of my two cents (sense). First, any of you that made these purchases shouldn't worry about how soon the companies call you back or whatever. At this point, from all I read, you'll be getting refunds. They have no choice but to do that (and you should really push for getting postage back, too; who cares if it costs them).

Second, about 15 years ago, I did a story for Autograph Magazine (back when we were in news stands), about the Grammy Foundation. They get the artists at the Grammy's to sign various things for them (photos, guitars, mostly) -- and they auction them off with the money going to their wonderful charity. The guy told me, how when Bruce Springsteen sits there and signs 20 photos, they take a picture of EACH ONE, him signing, then him holding it up, all as proof to the people that buy said photo. I asked if Bruce gets upset that, he can't just sit there and quickly sign 20 photos, he has to hold each one up, to take a photo of the photo. They responded along the lines of "No, no, he totally understands. People want proof the autograph is real nowadays." So, Dylan should have done the same thing (if ANY of the items were real). And going forward, any of these book stores, should do the same with ANY artist, claiming to sell books, CDs, or prints, that are "hand signed" or "autographed by the band." They should say, "We need proof. And it needs to be more than just ONE PHOTO of the artist sitting next to a stack of CDs. We need a bit more proof then that."

Yes - Probably the best Shop I buy from all the time  is Banquet records in the UK - they always post photos on their Twitter account of the stars Signing in their actual shop as they list them for sale - most of the time the stars play a small gig their anyway and you know anything you get from Banquet is always 100% Legit !

Well, Castle was relying on the word of Bob Dylan. It took crowdsourcing to figure out that the signatures were fake. They didn't bother to do that because they trusted Dylan. He is at fault. They acted in good faith, in my opinion, and were caught by surprise.

I still don't believe they didn't notice they were all autopenned?

Particularly the hundreds they had for sale at £25K each - what planet do they think their customers are on?

Sunset Monument Valley a massive print  @ 25K they had for sale with close up photos of  online had exactly the same autopenned autograph as copies they were sending out to customers and they didn't see ? Yes ok !!!

They offered a money back guarantee by issuing the certificate. That probably covers their liability. I think they were victims just like the end buyers.
