Greetings fellow Autographiles,

I am curious to see what people's opinions are on Charlton Heston's signing habits

I've always heard he was a popular and generous TTM signer, but did he use a secretary?

I had the attahced photo of Charlton Heston on eBay and eBay closed down my auction.

They claimed that a secretary signed the photo, and not the actor himslef

This signature matches another Heston I have (also signed by Kim Hunter)

I certainly hope eBay is wrong, and would value anyones opinion

Thanks - Todd

I'm afraid it is secretarial. Charlton Heston signed books through the mail but not pictures and things of that sort. Please refer to this great signature study and the comments on it for more information.

It's very encouraging to say that eBay took your listing down because these secretarial autographs have been a big problem. I'm sorry that what you have is secretarial, but at the same time, luckily his autograph isn't too expensive to take a loss on.

Hi Todd,

That is a secretarial unfortunately. There's an entire discussion on his secretarials if you're interested:

Steve

Thanks guys for the fast reply
Very interesting study following the links
I guess I should have mailed him a book while I had the chance!
Cheers - Todd

Todd - Sorry to deliver bad news, but you are in good company. We were all fooled for a long time.

Interesting that ebay is now yanking these. I wonder if one of their anonymous "reviewers" has that ability.

Thanks Mr. Zipper

I wrote Heston Twice years ago, and thought they were authentic as they matched all examples I could find.  He had a good secretary, although the studies show the distint difference

Luckily, I came across a real Heston in my collection

I hope you and the other will agree with me:

Interesting signature, Todd. When did you get that?

Yes, that's real Todd. An early signature of his. As early as the '50s but maybe the '60s.

Hey Brick - good call, it's actually dated "1957" although I do not know if that was in CH's hand or not

Hey Mr. Zipper - I acquired that from a dealer back in 1996

It is signed on the BACK of a preprinted Charlton Heston studio photo

Cheers - Todd

Truly, it's very heartening that eBay did remove your secretarial. So many secretarials and blatant forgeries are on eBay and many of us feel discouraged that they don't do enough to combat that.

Todd, also the TPA ones are giving everyone, including EBay an Excedrin headache as there is a considerably longer process and some "best sellers" will fight tooth and nail.   They appear to have changed their MO and are getting some right but it is difficult to tell since there isn't a "date stamp" even in the respective authentication sections of the TPA.

I can understand why Zipper is inquiring as we are starting to also see a reemergence or introduction of a new type of forgeries starting to eminate.

BBay, on yours, made the correct call.
