My friend in Zurich has this signed Hendrix 45, it's a German pressing of "Purple Haze". He is not an autograph collector and got this sometime in his 40+ years of record collecting. The signature looks ok to me, but as the item has no background info and he doesn't remember, where he got if from, I'd like to hear your opinions. The only time Jimi was in Switzerland was at the Monsterconcert in May 68 - I do have 100% genuine auographs from this visit, and they look somewhat similar but I'd like to read your opinions.

Pass from  me.

I’m struggling to see a problem with this signature. It’s tough to see the “N” within Noel’s hair though.

I moved this to the Hendrix forum.

I’m wondering if this was signed at the autograph signing in Cologne, Germany on 1/13/69.

I actually do have a signed card from the Cologne event, but unfortunately there's no background info to this signed 45 sleeve. My friend is not at all an autograph collector, but from time to time he found one, never paying an "autograph collector" price. As he bought most of his ca. 100 000 vinyl records here in Switzerland, I would assume this was signed in May 68 at the Monsterkonzert. IF it's genuine. I'd rather tend to yes, but it's difficult to judge. Here's a Hendrix sig from Zurich from my collection.

Here’s the signature from the 45 along with a signature from the signing.

Thanks Ballroom! In fact there are a similarities.

The comparison certainly puts a somewhat different complexion on things. I had been very put off by the "Jimi" in the OP but these two Jimi's are pretty similar.

Wowzer!

Hi Sam, nice to get some Hendrix activity again on the AL site.

I'm not at all convinced by the autograph but if this really was sold to your friend just as a cheap record and not as an expensive autograph you have to ask yourself who but Jimi would have signed it? It is certainly not a fan's signature and if no one was making any serious money on it then it is probably not a forger's work either.

A tricky one.

That's exactly what I thought and what leads me more to a genuine signature because there are no real serious concerns in the signature itself. To me, the handwriting looks a bit "square" however, but just a bit:-) The feltpen looks old, so I think this is a "period" signature.

I wouldn't say there are no real serious concerns about the signature (see also Eric's comments below)  but the background to the piece gives more hope that it is OK. A lot depends on whether your friend did just get it by chance as a record or whether someone asked a reasonable sum for it on the strength of the signature. It could also be, of course, that it was sold as a pricey autograph further back in its history. It is certainly not unknown for people to inherit expensive things and not know what was  been paid for them or what value they have.

I will ask my friend, if he remembers more on the provenance. But I know, he's not into autographs and guess he would only have added - say - 50 francs to the regular vinyl collector prize.
