I agree - effort = minimal at best.
Peppered lot. :-(
Are the questionable ones from the same seller that is selling the majority of the Kuster items? The Kuster sale was about the same size as the Verzi one. In fact, I think the Kuster sold for more. I have not happened to see any that I thought was bad but have only looked at TAGS and other shows not really high-end ones. If the problematic ones are from the original seller that is troubling in my opinion.
Scott - Honestly, yes, I do believe that there are problematic ones in this collection. There was a period of about 10 years from the death of Mr. Kuster to the time of the collection being offered in a large lot.
My opinion is the same as Eric's, it was peppered a lot. There was good material in there. Check out the previous AL thread from last month that I linked above.
It's sad because it has been dispersed now so widely and continues to this day. It's also sad that it was not reviewed adequately. Even RR gave a disclaimer not vouching for the authenticity of the entire collection when they sold it. In my opinion, that gave them an out.
Thank you Eddy - I don't recall your last sentence. It speaks loudly!
I'll give you a task, Eric.
I'd recommend going to the link above which also links the RR sale, I believe.
Read the description of the RR Kuster sale and pay attention to the very end of the description and share with me what you think.
I believe purple ink was used for his Grace Kelly and James Dean autographs.
Right. It was also used on many others including some other alleged "rarities". I recently spotted a Margaret Dumont from The collection that used the purple ink. She is scarce.
One thing I've noticed is that the more valuable a piece allegedly would be, the darker and more creative the ink colors often became.
I'd say it was designed for eye appeal when the collection finally went for sale.
I do not know either Grace Kelly or Deans signatures. Is the Kelly one suspect too? Both the Dean and Kelly are shown prior to the sale. With 25,000 autographs one has to believe a majority are good. Of course, a majority are not high-end ones too. I did notice at least one purple ink one on eBay, but it was an autograph worth $30 at the most although they want four times that. If one were to create a forged one purple ink for fountain pen usually you think of 40s-50s into the 60s. So, would be a good ink to use for a star of that era.
Sinatra purple ink. Reagan purple ink,
That was some pen that had purple anti-aging ink back in the day! Perfect cards as well!
Thank you Eddy I remember it now. "...as this collection is sold as is and no returns will be accepted."

The first bit in the auction description was bad enough. The others also.....another out in the Terms.
Margret Dumont - Groucho's "lady" friend in these films?
Eddy, has anyone searched those particulate problematic "Kuster" album pages looking for a matching hand on another problem item with the same origin story - not recently "said to be" from that collection? I might start there?
