James Stewart Autographs: Which are Genuine, Autopens or Forgeries?

Isn't this an Autopen signature?

In my opinion, that is a beautiful example of an authentic

James Stewart Signature.

Nice find

Bob,

Thank you very much for taking the time to give your opinion. Appreciate it very much.

This is a very nice, authentic signature. I'm glad it's under glass because it's just the kind of signed picture I love to see framed and on display. I thought it was from Harvey at first. Took me around ten minutes to figure out the photo is from Magic Town!

"collectnuts!!" on eBay is still at it, peddling tons of forgeries, including plenty of signatures I'm very familiar with like Jimmy Stewart, Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Cary Grant and on and on. This Jimmy Stewart, which I could swear seems modeled after the common autopen which actually started this thread sold to some unlucky bidder for $227.49 + shipping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jimmy-Stewart-Hand-Signed-8-x-10-B-W-Photo-...

How in the world did that goes to $227?!?!?

Even unquestionably authentic examples on much more desirable poses go for a fraction of that.

Could be shill bidding, but probably not given the quantity of forgeries that 'collectnuts' sells. Some kooky things go on with Jimmy Stewart SP's. PSA/JSA authenticated SP's usually only sell in the $50-$100 range. It's fairly common for nice unauthenticated but authentic James Stewart SP's to sell in the $20-$40 range on eBay and for around six months there, most were ending in the $20 range.

Sadly, I always come to the same conclusion. More buyers need more knowledge on the autographs they're purchasing and the people they're purchasing them from.

I'm a big fan of the unauthenticated but authentic $30 - $40. I have a stack of them. :-)

I really like the portion of your collection you posted much earlier in this thread. You picked some great items. The diversity is great. It seems like so much of what's offered at auction or on eBay is the same three or four promotional photos he had on-hand for TTM requests.

Not sure if you saw this sell at auction around Christmastime, but it certainly deserves a spotlight in this thread:

It sold with a PSA letter for around $450. I'd say the buyer paid a very fair price. Donna Reed material alone does achieve pretty solid numbers. This is the type of item I could see really catching fire at RR or even receiving a strong offer on a eBay best offer when the right guy or gal came along. Surprised I haven't seen many similar items like you see with Charlton Heston/Linda Harrison on POTA stuff or even with James Stewart/Kim Novak Vertigo items.

That is a terrific SP.  For whatever reason, it seems that Wonderful Life poses are relatively uncommon in authentic form.

Regarding a number of my SPs... they appear to be on first generation promotional prints. I got them many years ago on ebay from a seller who was selling a small collection of them. I regret not getting more!

I have scads of Jimmy Stewart signatures, contracts, checks and sp. He was so good about signing that I wrote to him often. I always wonder why the Rabbit drawings he did were in one color ink but his signature was in another. any ideas? I have about twenty of the Harvey sketches I got from him in the mail.

I'm selling a Jimmy Stewart signed business check on ebay now.

Post your collection. I'd love to see it and I'm sure I'm not alone.

I have not had one in-hand, but I recall reading (somewhere earlier here?) that in some of them, the rabbit sketch is pre-printed. That might account for the different color inks.
