Hi Guys,

There might be another thread with the same name somewhere on the blog, but i haven't seen a thread i can recall that dealt specifically on this topic. And its something i find really interesting and exciting. I think all of us have occasionally come across an amazing autograph, often extremely rare, offered for an unbelievably low price.

Now, im not talking about your average deals here. We come across great values all the time, but coming across items that have a value of 3 to 4 times what you paid for them, if not much more, is more uncommon. And its those that i find so interesting. And i would love to hear what you consider your best "steal" on an autograph.

Mine would probably be my Wes Montgomery "Travelin Wes" gatefold signed mint LP. I purchased this off ebay a couple years back. The guy was selling it for his friend who was a bar manager at a club Wes played at. He had Wes sign the LP and then he put it away. The signature is large for a Wes signature and very bold and distinct. It is the best signature example i have ever seen from him. I paid 200 BIN for it.

Realistically that item probably would go for 1500 to 2000 dollars at a high profile auction. RR sold a nice full sig Wes photo a while back and it got around 1400 i think. So as far as value, thats probably my best. Whats yours?

Here's one I regret selling...but I was needing some ca$h at the time...

I picked this up for $85 (came with JSA full letter, which in itself costs $150), and later sold it on ebay for $900.  I'm guessing if I put it at a major auction house would have brought in $1200-1500 but at the time,  I didn't want to wait the few months it would take.

just posted this i consider the $450.00 price tag a steal since ungraded it books for $1,200 i believe

A Walt Disney signed check authenticated by Phil Sears for $800

A fully signed Aerosmith album for $25

A Harrison Ford signed 8x10 for $35.

A Dale Earnhardt SR signed car for $50

A Guns N Roses signed CD cover for $100/a drumhead for $250(same seller)

And that's a few off the top of my head.

Compared to the stuff being posted about here, my two best steals are pretty small-time, but they were a great price: Free. Back in the late '80s, I was a summer intern in the publicity department of Polygram Records, then Capitol Records. One day, my assignment was to clean some junk out of The Record Room—a tiny, windowless, grey room with industrial shelving full of records by bands who had come and gone, as well as some promotional items (Clime Fisher leather bookbags and Poison "Open Up And Say Ah" tongue depressors come to mind).

In the process I stumbled across a pair of gatefold UK pressings of Marillion's Misplaced Childhood signed by the whole band and a big, rolled up print (maybe 36x40) on heavy art stock of Duran Duran's Notorious album cover, defaced to decorate the bandmembers as if they were in Santa outfits. The print was numbered 11/126 and was signed in pencil by the three guys in the band at the time. The reason it had been abandoned in there was that someone had apparently spilt coffee on the white border. They and various other items and records went into a big rolling dumpster bin, but I was told as we finished, 'If you want any of this stuff, feel free.' And I did. I jammed soooo much stuff into one of those leather bookbags that the shoulder strap broke by the time I got home from all the weight!

As for the autographed items, I gave a Marillion LP to a friend who loved them, kept the other (never a fan but it's nice to have) and about 10 years later, got the Duran print matted and framed perfectly so that the stain is completely covered up - it's a great-looking piece with impeccable province, having come from Capitol itself, and it's up on my wall here as I type this.

My greatest steal was...probably a Ringo sig I picked up for $50 on Ebay a few years ago. Turns out it was fake, look for deals but always authenticate them!!

Am I missing something? You bought a $50 Ringo of EBAY that turned out to be a fake and consider that a great steal?

It was for the seller. LOL

Your right Z. I was thinking the same thing.

Lots of really good deals, but true STEALS are far and few between. I think this one qualifies.

Paid $30 for this at a flea market 2 years ago. It was mixed in with a pile of personalized signed photos. Many were secretarials.... obviously a through-the-mail collection. This was the only one worth more than what the dealer was asking. Probably $350 FMV

95% of my collection was obtained in person and free!
My best purchased deal was a Bill Clinton baseball from eBay for under $100.

Wasn't there a thread about current deals somewhere? I can't see to find it and I haven't been online in a while.

picked this single signed Carl Hubbell ball for $20...had to sell it a couple years back...went for $200

My uncle giving me his Jackie Robinson ball...not exactly a steal because I didn't purchase it...but most def one of my biggest name items for the cost of zero dollars...
