What's with all the inflated Elon Musk valuations on Ebay? Is this simply a trend? Is it part of an Elon fanboy club? I'm not criticizing people who are interested in these autographs or EM, just trying to understand why people consider these prices justified. One seller told me it's modern art. Art must be created. A few squiggle marks may make something more valuable, but certainly doesn't make it art.

Overinflated market caused by the pandemic and people rushing into the market to buy collectibles, signed or otherwise. (See grossly overpriced NFT-style signatures, as I mentioned in another topic - it's a shell game.)

For one thing, Musk's signature is far more prevalent than, say, Steve Jobs -- a comparable bigwig whose known signatures were few and far between because he was notoriously averse to doing it.

Also, his signature isn't selling for $10k - that's just what people are listing it for (scammers, likely, and there are plenty of fraud rings on EBay for authors/signers you might not expect). Real value is 25-50% of that figure.

Thanks for your response. Makes sense! I’ll check out that article.

One just sold on eBay which was authenticated for $2500.

Hi Joe,

I’m sure an EM autograph at that price would sell. I understand the guy’s popularity. Have you seen some of the other asking prices? $5,000, $11,000, $35,000? I’m sure you know some people do sell his graphs on Facebook groups for around $2,000 and then jack them up to $8,000. Lol. Personally, I’d rather have an Elton John if I was going to pay the $3,000 range, but that’s just personal preference. Have a great weekend :-)

You should not have to pay anything close to 3K for Elton John either. Asking prices on eBay are all over the board. If you want to learn about estimated prices try RR Auctions Past Auction final prices. That will help you avoid overpaying.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the tip! I’m new to collecting. Do you use RR auctions to purchase autographs? I’ve been looking for a good auction site. The only other place I buy from is Real Autograph Collectors Club.

I've bought from RACC members as well as RR Auctions. I don't facebook so most of the RACC member purchases has been here at this site. Both are good resources, IMO.

Thank you Joe. I appreciate it.
