This signed picture sleeve will be offered in the next Gotta Have Rock and Roll auction.

I don’t see an issue with the signatures. However, the problem is the provenance. It’s a German picture sleeve, and in the letter of provenance the original recipient provides a very specific and detailed account of getting it signed on 9/14/68 in Germany.

The confusing part is that the photo on the front of the sleeve was taken on 9/18/68 in Copenhagen. So, obviously the picture sleeve didn’t exist on the date he claims it was signed.

It was released after the Doors returned to the US. As far as I know, they didn’t return to Europe as a group until they played the Isle of Wight Festival in August of 1970.

I'm not commenting on authenticity, but I've seen several letters like this with wrong dates.

Thanks, Mark. Could you possibly post one?

I can’t think of any off the top of my head but I’ve seen several people with 63 sets (Beatles) write that they were obtained in later years.

Ah, got it. It’s just that there’s so much detail. It was suggested to me that he might have gotten a different item signed at that show and obtained the signed picture sleeve at a later time. I think it would have to have been signed in the US.

Very likely.

Great point Mark, but...if that part is wrong, it makes you wonder. I agree -- the signatures look great to me. Especially if, well...if it were a forgery, why would the person just put Robby without the Kreiger? Stuff like that makes me like items more. The Doors OFTEN signed with just their first names. So I like the look of this piece, but that letter....is obviously something to worry about.

Thanks, Josh. That’s a good point about Robby’s signature. Sometimes they all signed just their first name and sometimes it’s a combination of first name and full signatures. However, you wouldn’t expect the latter with a full set of forgeries.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the latter. It could make them seem more believable.

That’s a good point. Forger reverse psychology.

Reverse psychology or more skillful forging?

Also -- question for Ballroom -- what do you think the item will go for?

That’s a tough one because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fully signed picture sleeve before. I’ll have to check, but I don’t recall ever having seen one. Have you seen another one?
