Been going to local auctions the last 1/2 a year or so, and have found some really cool items (I think!)   95% of the time I don't buy anything because they are obvious fakes, but sometimes ya get lucky and a legitimate sports collector is auctioning off their stuff or they passed away and their family has put their items up for auction.  Sometimes you'll go to an estate auction with tons of stuff (household goods, furniture, etc) and some signed balls may be buried at the bottom of a box and you get really lucky...I typically only buy things with authentication like UDA, Steiner, MM, Tristar or JSA, PSA/DNA - though as we all know some of them are just opinions, and even these can be faked.  Just the other day i was at an auction and saw a Mantle postcard that was encased in a SGC holder saying it was authentic...however there was a crack in the case (enough where someone could slip in/out the autograph. pretty shady!

Anyway, I'm attaching pictures of 2 Joe DiMaggios and 2 Ted Williams, all which i'm nearly certain are legit.

The 2 Ted Williams are on Legends Sports Memorabilia magazines (and 2 unsigned magazines).  This came with COA's from Legends (saying the autos were signed in the presence of a Upper Deck rep as he was under their contract then) as well as the original invoice from Legends saying the shipment included 2 autographed magazines, one with 22K gold stamp, dated 1993.  On the inside cover of the unsigned magazines, they list that autographed magazines will be availabe for sale the next month, which matches the 2 signed mags)  This was before my time of collecting autographs, so I didn't really know about this magazine.  Maybe some of you remember it?

The first DiMaggio is on the inside of a program book from a restaurant called Ciro's.  WWCB Radio presented Corry-Erie County Sports Dinner Monday January 26, 1976.  As you can see, it came with the program ticket.  Joe was the guest of honor and also featured Jim Palmer, Dennis Eckersly, Ron Jarowski and a few others.  This is the one I'm most curious about - any thoughts?

The second DiMaggio is an original oil painting by Wayne Prokopiak. For those that don't know him, he does paintings of sports personalities (Namath, Ali, Mantle to name a few).  What he does is have them sign blank canvases and then he paints around it.  Pretty cool piece, even if it didn't have Dimaggio's signature.  This one came with a full letter from JSA stating it's an authentic oil painting signed by both artist and Joe.  I'm nearly certain this is legit, but thought it was a cool piece to share, nonetheless...it's framed with a glass over the painting, so the quality of the pic is a bit sub-par.

I can provide closer up pics if needed!

Thanks guys!   love this site!  I spend hours lurking and reading all the old forum posts.

took a better picture of the oil painting, under better light.

I think the Williams and the Joe D in the magazine are authentic and I am not sure on the oil painting.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your reply and opinion!  Interesting, as the oil painting came with a JSA letter...it did say on it specifically in bold "Apparently, the signature was applied prior to the artwork"

anyone else have any opinions on this set of autos?

gracias!

The Joe DiMaggio on the magazine is gorgeous.

Thanks Christopher!

I agree with Ryan on the Williams and Dimaggio.  The Dimaggio on the painting is a mystery to me.  If I saw that signature on a ball or photo, I would most likely believe it to be not authentic. but taking into account that it is on canvas, and not sure what he used to sign it with, I would have to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Thanks for your feedback terrier.  Here's the JSA LOA...they describe the writing implement as a Fiber Tip Marker.

One observation i did have is that the painting is actually on the small size - about 4.25 inches by 6.25 inches.  His signature spans about 2 inches...in comparison, the signature i have in the Dinner Program spans about 3.5 inches.  Perhaps for the painting he was told to sign within a 2 inch margin, and that is why the autograph doesn't appear to be as fluid or natural.  just a thought...
