I was doing my regular auction trawl last night and came across this oddity.

I much prefer Beatles autographs from the earlier or later periods (or at least ones that were not signed when they were signing like crazy in 1963) so I starting licking my lips when I saw the attached item pop up.

To my relatively untrained eye the signatures on the back look early - as if they could have been signed when the Beatles were still playing in Hamburg. However, the letter of provenance states that they were obtained in late April1963.

I am not totally confident that the signatures are quite right for 1962 anyway - particularly the Paul and Ringo.

Anybody have any views as to whether the signatures:

1. Are right for 1962?

2. Could possibly be from April 1963?

Why a Star Club card would have been to hand in Shewsbury, England is another question of course.

I think late 62 or beginning of 63... For me is real!

Yes, I'm wondering if the letter of provenance (LOP) is wrong. It could be that the writer got the dates muddled because the Beatles also played at the same venue on 14 December 1962 - at that time they may well have been carrying Star Club material around.

I am not saying that the writer of the LOP is being dishonest. It has to be borne in mind that the two events took place over 50 years ago and the writer didn't actually attend either of them.

There's a similar set from November of '62 in the current RR auction. It's on the same card.

Thanks Ballroom. The RR card is remarkably similar so I think my December 1962 theory is probably correct.

I couldn't help laughing at the level of detail in the RR provenance. I'm sure the basic story is true but the level of detail is incredible. I hope I can remember things in that level of detail in 50 years - but then again I'll be 105!

You'd be surprised especially at events that stick in the mind. I've been going to gigs for over 30 years and remember a lot about them.

My mother worked at the TV Studios were The Beatles recorded their first national music TV Show, in Aston Birmingham. She worked there from 1956 into early 1960's and remembers a lot like meeting people like Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent.

The collection of autographs I'm collating come from someone who remembers much of what happened at many of the meets he had with people like the Beatles. I think certain things are easier to trigger memories than others.

ballroom could you post a photo of this card, I cannot locate it on RR, I would like to see it and the description of it that pug mentions , if you have it

I think it's a genuine set signed during or not long after their last stint in Hamburg....nice!

nice early set

For m is not nice because have too much wear.. Not in good condition... Real but condition poor...

Late 62...or VERY early 1963...

If it helps for comparison here are three of mine taken in Birmingham in Nov 1962, just shortly before they returned to Hamburg for their final run of shows there.

Note also that in 1962 you see McCartney quite often wrote "The Beatles" on autographs. Remember they were pretty unknown nationally back then until they did their first Thank Your Lucky Stars TV show shot in January 1963 in Aston Birmingham.

Also from same show in 1962

Another from same show in 1962.

This next one is from the March 1963 shows - This one is from the Birmingham Town Hall gig - they did with Chris Montez & Tommy Roe. I don't have any John Lennon ones from this show as he turned up separately to the other three, but at least it might serve as a good comparison for the others.

If you look at the 62 ones at least for McCartney he is seems to be using a distinctive pen in terms of its style and colour which I've also seen on other early McCartney's.

Mine were hand written by them and taken face-to-face from a good friend of mine who owns these autographs. The 1962 ones were from the Plaza Ballroom in Birmingham in a very un-documented gig that the Birmingham Mail last year tried to track down people who attended it.

My friend actually met them as they arrived in a van and went back stage and got these autographs and was invited to the soundcheck - he declined the soundcheck! Remember at that point they had just one single out so no big deal.

The 1963 ones were taken at the stage door of Birmingham Town Hall in March of 1963 but as i said Lennon is missing as he appeared to turn up separately to the others for some reason.

These are all face-to-face geunie autographs so a good comparison ones to check against if your looking for 1962 and 1st quarter 1963 examples.

Remember also with a lot of these think about the circumstances the autographs were taken. Were they rushed with lots of fans around? what was they leaning on to take the autographs?

For the 1962 ones and at least my examples there was only about 20-30 people attended the gig and they were signed without lots of screaming fans around quietly back stage.

Same with the March 1963 ones. They were taken at back stage door but it was Chris Montez and Tommy Roe who were the stars of the show.

The 'G" in George was different from Nov. 1962 to early 1963. I have a couple of Harrison's from Jan 1963 where he signed his last name with the lower case "h"...
