Hello everyone.  I recently started buying autographs from eBay. I sadly have a trigger finger and bought a lot of items, most of which had CoAs but I've been reading about companies now and have suddenly become paranoid about some things that I have bought or have current bids on.

I am kicking myself for not checking out this site first. I was hoping to get your opinion on some things.

I honestly thought all of this stuff was legit and seemed to come from reputable sellers and had legitimate CoAs but I'm questioning it all now reading a lot of the things on this website and an experience I had recently. I bought a Derek Jeter Ball, Mariano Rivera ball and Tom Brady football. The two baseballs did not have CoAs so I got them authenticated by JSA. The Brady football came with a CoA from Mayhem Sports in Michigan and looked a little bogus so I submitted that and it failed. Thankfully the seller is refunding me everything including the JSA fee but now I am second guessing my other items.

I thought Gridiron Authentics was a safe bet but I've been reading that they are selling CoAs with photos of players signing the item but the item itself is different or duped. I've also read that Global Authentics has gone down hill. I've read that Left Field Sports Memorabilia from LA is all fake and I know nothing about CAAI.

I would like to get this stuff looked at by JSA but I'm worried that if they do not pass, I'll be unable to return these items and would have lost the money from the JSA fee.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

You are correct about Gridiron Authentics. Initially I believe they sold real autographs, but they are now selling forgeries. They are extremely deceiving and I am so surprised they have not been shut down. I really hope somebody big gets involved and shuts them down.

Global Authentics is also very suspicious. Would you be able to include some pictures of the autographs in question?

Thanks,

Kevin

Thank you for your reply Kevin. I've made some new threads with pictures on them so you can grab the links at the bottom.

Thanks again!

Without seeing pictures it is hard say...please post some.   That being said, the ones that come with players holograms (if they are real) should be authentic, definitely better than a random COA from Bob Smith's Sport Shop.

Online Authentics is reputable, so if the picture matches what you have, you can be pretty certain it's real.    Does the online authentics Rice photo and the Rice mini helmet look alike?

Online Authentics seems to have changed in recent years. They may still certify for Muhammad Ali, and if so the autographs coming from his company should be just fine. They may certify other known private signings as well. But there has been other material that has been questionable. I think they're more of a registry, where you send things in and they give it a COA and put it in their database without authenticating it.

Hopefully others here know more about them, and Online Authentics themselves will probably tell you if they authenticated the items you got from them or if they simply registered them.

Hi, Steve.

From what I know, when Online Authentics actually authenticates an item (rather than just registering the item) the following report is posted on their website with a photo:

"Physically Reviewed Item Detail Report"

Registration #:
Item Signed By:
Type of Item Signed:
Type of Writing Device:
Origin of Item: Physical Review
Date Item was Signed:
Picture of Item:

From what I know, if your item from Online Authentics is registered as a private signing you're 100% fine. If it's under physical review, well, then... good luck.

It would be great to start with someone here at AML being able to tell you if the signature is authentic (I wish I could, but I don't know Jerry Rice's signature). That's more important than what the website listing states, and it can help us evaluate Online Authentics' skill at authentication.

Park West Gallery has been sued numerous times. Google them:

A class action lawsuit appears to have been filed against them, too. Not sure if it's still active:

And one of our members bought a Muhammad Ali that was determined to be fake from them on a cruise.

Hi Peter,

I don't can't find anywhere on their site that they say they actually authenticate the item. They say they review it and register it, but I couldn't find anywhere where they said they actually autenticated the item. Am I missing it?

This is what they say on their homepage:

OnlineAuthentics.com provides an online registry that enables manufacturers of autographed memorabilia to provide a detailed profile for items that they produce. All registered items have a unique number assigned which allows collectors to verify their items by simply entering the registration number into our website. Incorporated into each items profile is a text description of the item that includes what type of item it is as well as when it was signed and the company of origin. In addition to the text description users will see a digital image of the exact signature on their item. It is our mission to help collectors know that the items that they spend their hard earned money on are absolutely 100% authentic. Happy CollectingOnlineAuthentics.com

From the website:

Physical Review Service

OnlineAuthentics.com offers a Physical Review program that allows our users to submit items for physical examination by our Review Staff, a group of some of the most knowledgeable and experienced dealers and collectors in the industry.

Continued from website.....

Many collectors have large collections of signed sports memorabilia and we invite our users to send us items for our Review Staff to evaluate. Once our Review Staff determines an item meets our review parameters we will then issue a numbered letter outlining what the item is as well as our review of the item.

Notice they never actually say they autheticate the item.
