Authenticity is Everything
Clark Gable?
Here's one I'd like to get an opinion on. It's a Gable signature on a Laszlo Willinger photo from a movie called "Strange Cargo." I've wondered about this one for a long time. I sent a photo of the autograph in to AutographCOA some time back for an online opinion. They said it was good. I'd still like to have some of your thoughts about it.
There is some guy selling copies of this exact same photo on eBay for about $10. It's the same identical signature in exactly the same spot as this signature. I've looked at this signature very closely under the lights. This signature was signed with a pen. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

All silliness aside, I read the article. I put on a jeweler magnifying headset, and examined the signature according to the articles instructions. Under magnification I could see that the ink is red. There is no red in the photograph. Also, there are tiny indentation lines made by a pen. Furthermore. the indented pen lines show that uneven amounts of pressure were applied when the autograph was signed. I'm not doing the smudge test.
My conclusion, based on the educational information supplied by you Eric, has led me to conclude that there is a high likelihood that the Gable autograph is indeed genuine.

Never the smudge test. OK, worse things have been said to me. But understand, this is a conclusion that must be reached before an item is listed for sale IMO. The ACOA is a quick opinion which cannot determine live ink. Could fail in hand. It is, as they say, not definitive. The fact that there are copies for sale does not help. And of course, the other determination, by Piece of the Past - what else would they say but "authentic"...they were trying to sell it to you.

Hey Mike! ACOA call it something other than a "quick opinion" - it isn a term I tend to use to cover those types of determinations. Reply times can vary for many reasons.

It took a number of days to get the results back. I don't remember exactly how many days. I still have the results report. I can look to see if the dates are on it.

I have the one photo with the actual signature. There is only one POTP COA. That is the one I have. I am not selling anything on POTP. This is not confusing. I had the signature sent in to POTP some time back. Kevin Martin said that is was authentic and issued me a COA. About a year earlier I sent several photos of the same autographed photo to ACOA. They gave me an online opinion saying that the same Clark Gable signature passed their online examination. So the autograph passed in two places: Piece of the Past and ACOA. Having passed two online authentication exams, I took it that the autograph is authentic. So I listed it on my website for sale for $549.00.
There is some guy selling printed copies of the same photo I have on eBay, for about $10. I've seen his listing several times on eBay. Where he got the image for the prints he is selling I don't know. But I do know that it is the same image as the photo I have, only his are printed copies.
I put the Gable autograph on AutographLive yesterday so I could get some additional input about the autograph from people like you. There is nothing wrong with trying to get as much expert information about a signature as is humanly possible. I'm not trying to pull anything fishy! I respect and value both AutographLive, and you and your opinions.
I don't know what makes you think I would be trying to pull anything. What would I be trying to pull? I'm not trying to sell it to anyone at AutographLive. I just thought I could gain some additional insight from seasoned veterans about the authenticity of the autograph. That's it.
I've heard negative stuff about Piece of the Past. I also heard good stuff. I heard stuff both ways about ACOA. There's nothing wrong with trying to get as much expert information about any piece really. I've heard people say that the only way a person can really know if an autograph is authentic is to stand and watch them sign it in person. Is there something wrong with trying to get more expert information about an autograph? If there is, then I readily plead guilty, and you have right not to trust me in any way whatsoever. Because that's all I'm guilty of.

Whose eBay account from your state by someone with your name is selling the POTP ACOA item you have? Good sellers do not sell items they have just posted here not knowing if they are authentic or hand signed! You could have cleared this up at any time. That still leaves you selling items you are questioning! You posted that Gable in "Is This Autograph Real"?

I'm not signed out. Now, how could I benefit in any way whatsover by "jerking you around? Eric listen, I trash-canned two autographs that cost me about $500 yesterday because you and several other members gave your opinions saying that both the Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor autographs were fake. I trusted you, your judgement and expertise enough to watch 2 pretty expensive pieces of junk ride down the street in the back of a garbage truck.
Honestly, I don't know what makes you think I'd be trying to jerk you around. How would I benefit from doing something like that? What would I stand to gain, the throne to some imperial kingdom, riches beyond belief, what?
If you think I'm trying to pull some monkey business, and you don't trust me, well, that's certainly your right. But in this case, your suspicions are both unjustified, and unwarranted. However, that distrust is your call, not mine. I think I've already proven my trust in you and your judgement.
