It was likely authenticated by PSA, JSA, or BAS. Leaf, as far as I always knew, uses authenticated autographs. They are certainly not experts on autographs so they rely on those who supposedly are. Of course, those companies make plenty of mistakes. 

Keep in mind that BG does not set the market prices for the cuts that he includes in his sets. Many card collectors prefer cut autograph CARDS and are more than willing to pay a premium for them over a signed book/cd/etc. BG is simply supplying the card market with autograph cards that collectors want. Can't blame him for purchasing affordable autographs to include in his sets...to me, it seems like a good business move.
