I would definitely appreciate input on this experience.
Recently, on a search I came across a nice vintage signed photos of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello offered
by a dealer in the U.K. (I'm in the States).
I wrote the dealer an email of introduction and asked a couple of questions since these are more expensive pieces. One question was whether the Abbott photograph had a fault in the original printing process as it looks like it to me.
Also, I asked about what appears to be ink smudges in the lower part of each photograph.
The answers that I got were that the scanner used to prepare the posting of the images to the website had shifted the Abbott photo and also that the smudges were on the bed of the scanner and transferred to the image. Fair enough, I guess.
I also asked if this was a kind of turquoise fountain pen ink that was used or a colored pencil as there is a bit of cloudiness to the images. The answer to me was that if a photo is signed in ink, it will say so on the website. Actually, it doesn't mention the writing instrument used in either description on the site.
Since I would be a potential first time customer, I also asked what mail service is used to the States from the U.K. and the costs. The answer came to me that "The questions you are asking are all answered on my website!" Actually, under the site's category of shipping and returns, there is no listing of the carrier to be used or the costs and the other questions I had were also not on the site.
Do these questions seem out of bounds if you have not had a previous experience with the dealer? The return policy is that they are accepted if not as described but the descriptions mostly focus upon a small bio. of the signer. "William Alexander “Bud” Abbott was an American actor, best known for his film comedy double act, as straight man to Lou Costello. A glossy signed 8×10 with intact borders. The image slightly slipped in the scanner." / "Louis Francis Cristillo, professionally known as Lou Costello, was an American actor, best known for his film comedy double act with straight man Bud Abbott. Costello had started as an athlete, before working in burlesque on Broadway, where he stood-in for Abbott’s partner who had failed to show up. A glossy signed & inscribed 8×10 with intact borders."
Thoughts? Am I off even still considering a purchase from this source? A lot of material on the site does not look good to me but these do seem genuine.... to my eyes at least.
Thanks for reading this and any potential input.
