Ebay Seller Puredetroit Sells Forged Signed Derek Jeter Baseball

Once again this proves how easy it is to sell forgeries on EBay.

Check out this obvious and laughable forged Derek Jeter baseball that was sold by Ebay seller Puredetroit for a whopping $99.00 (Buy It Now was $125.00 and Best Offer accepted was $99.00).

You would be hard-pressed to find a more laughable Derek Jeter forgery on a baseball.

Ebay is so heavily-populated with delusional autograph collectors and impulse buyers, that selling forgeries on Ebay is easier than selling authentic autographs.

The buyer of this ugly forged Derek Jeter baseball probably thinks they got a steal; they got ripped off.

And for some reason, people on Ebay think that Ebay filters out the forgeries; nothing could be further from the truth; in my opinion, EBay encourages the listing and selling of forgeries by doing nothing about them.

For the last twenty years, Ebay has profited big-time from the sales of forgeries.

I will continue to expose Ebay sellers of forgeries.  This crap continues to devalue the authentic autographs of true collectors and this garbage also makes it difficult for sellers of authentic autographs to sell their items on EBay.

Here is that laughable forged Derek Jeter baseball sold by Ebay seller Puredetroit for $99.00.

Christopher,

This ball was obtained from a third party (Auto Central) over 15 years ago, which could very well explain why his signature has changed over time. Obviously I can't guarantee that this isn't fake as I didn't witness it getting signed but I think this is a little unfair of you to ruin my reputation without contacting me first. I have been out of the country for the past week and therefore have not shipped out the baseball but I did refund the buyer the full purchase price this morning when someone else told me about this article. I have hundreds of items for sale and all but two autographs (Jeter and Andruw Jones baseballs) were obtained in person and guaranteed 100% authentic. I plan on throwing away the two balls that were purchased from private third party dealers as it's not worth damaging my reputation. I'd appreciate if you remove my ebay name from this article.

on many occasions we have contacted the sellers of these obvious forgeries, and get less than favorable responses.  As the seller, you are responsible for the authenticity of your items, so if your reputation is important, which I am sure it is, then you might want to be more selective in the future, regarding the items you list.  There are sources you can use to compare signatures, and this one is a really bad forgery, would have been easy to spot with some effort.

What's disturbing about this, is that you're selling something that you don't know anything about? Really? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. But if I'm selling a Jeter autograph, or anything else for that matter, you better believe I'm going to know what I'm selling and knowing that it's 100% authentic.

No disrespect!

Pure Detroit--

You sold that forgery for $99.00 and had a "Buy It Now" of $125.00; if you knew that was authentic, there is no way you would have listed it for $125.00 and accepted a Best Offer of $99.00.

First of all chris, you don't know me so don't sit here and accuse me of knowingly selling a forgery and don't assume what i would be willing to sell an autograph for.

I assumed it was authentic as i purchased it from a listing in a reputable sports magazine over 15 years ago (most likely almost 20 yrs). I understand that his signature looks a little different now and i assumed that it was likely to have changed over the years. Either way, I did the right thing and reimbursed the buyer and removed all other autographs from my ebay listings that i didn't personally witness getting signed, which was 1 other item.

For use in the future as a rule of thumb. Stay away from COA's that look generic like this. Yeah there may be an occasion where the autograph is authentic but on big names you will find far often then not they are bad.

I hate jumping in on these threads, but I believe it's important what Chris does here.

Part of what people do here is to bring to our attention forgeries listed for sale. And yes I understand mistakes can and do happen on occasion.

ALL of the respected members here sell 100% authentic items.

I have no problem with that either and I certainly don't condone anyone selling forgeries. But I also don't appreciate being accused of knowingly selling a forgery. Especially based on how much I was willing to sell something for.

You can review every single item I have listed for sale or previously sold and you will see everything is 100% authentic. I know this because all but two items, which have been removed from eBay and will be thrown away, we're obtained in person. The other item that I purchased may very well be legitimate but its not worth risking my reputation again for a few bucks.

I feel like no one is willing to give me the benefit of the doubt and recognize that I did the right thing in resolving the situation.

You absolutely did the right thing by destroying those even though you take a loss. Not many do that.

+1

What do you want eBay to do about it?  Hire a team of handwriting analysts?  What happened to caveat emptor?

Not necessarily. Just weed out the forgers and get rid of them. And since that's not being done, expose them for the crooked bastards that they are.

As for caveat emtor????  We care!!!
