As much as a minefield as autograph collecting is, the whole "game used" thing always struck me as much more dangerous since it seemed to me even more of an "honor system" thing, if not a flat-out leap of faith for the collector - usually an expensive one.

Yeah and Upper Deck/Topps have been called out several time for these "game used" swatches:

Only way to be sure a game worn item is real is bang on provenance or a solid photo match. Jersey/stick/bat cards are useless as well.

The problem is that prior to this, authentication from Manning and the Giants would have been considered "bang on provenance." So it looks like we are left with solid photo match.

Given how - unless there's noticeable and distinctive staining or damage - all the jerseys and helmets basically look the same, how helpful would photo evidence be anyway?

In the NY Post article it mentioned that Steiner started getting feedback from buyers that the items did not match up according to the photos, and that's how some of this got started... (and it said they would refund the items, but turned around and resold them... =/ )

All these authenticators are businesses. PSA, Steiner, JSA...etc. They all have a priority. Their bottom line will always be the most important. If any of these businesses were in it to preserve the hobby they would have closed up shop years ago.
