How many Liz Taylor signatures are out there - the handwriting looks the same but the wording is strange. This was on a trip journal from a girl sailing on the ship. Wasn’t ET embroiled with Mike Todd and the end of Giant and doing Raintree in 1956? This thing is on EBay now. What do the experts think. I would say it’s real because of the handwriting but everything else says slow down and seek others input!!
Thanks

Liz on the old Britannic? Taylor was crossing on the Queen Mary in 1950 and on the QE2 with Burton in '64 - no idea what such a huge star would be doing on a 20 year old outmoded cruise ship about to be decommissioned after another fire and a collision just just the year before. Taylor was on the cover of Silver Screen in June 1956 - huge to quote someone or other...

Filming for Giant was completed in October of 1955.

But what really interests me is the diary - it is noted they departed New York on the 13th, and then it is noted were already at Cobh, Ireland...on the 15th? That is impossible. This ship did 18 knots at best. But then, they were not in Liverpool for another 7 days? Hmmm...that seems quite a problem. Big blunder for such a meticulous diary.

I don't think that looks like Taylor's handwriting. Does anyone see anything between the Taylor signature and the hand in the diary? Look at the m's.

Raintree Country was apparently still in production but with a break from 13 May to 23 July. The reason is that Monty Clift had his accident on May 12, 1956 - I thought Taylor was supposed to be at his bedside during this time? Anyway, Elizabeth Taylor was indeed at David Niven's yacht party in California on June 29th, 1956 in time to meet Mike Todd, so I can't see her on an outdated old cruise liner on June 13-22, 1956. Perhaps some more digging...

Must have been another Liz Taylor. Selling this as ET.
As always I appreciate your input.

No problem. See what Joe says about the handwriting.

Not signed by the famous actress, Elizabeth Taylor. IMO.

Thank you Joe. What I always wonder is if I should mention to a seller on EBay that their item might not be legit. I did that once and got reamed out so I hesitate to do it again.

You are not required to mention a seller unless you believe that the particular seller is intentionally selling forgeries. What is important is that YOU are taking steps to avoid making a poor buying decision. I salute you!

Thank you!!

This is a good example of why I feel dates and information are of value - I was told otherwise today and I seriously disagree. Look at the connection between dates and signing styles for example - and remember that Monroe menu. Turned out it was a 1952/53 style signature on a 1962/3 menu as I recall. Some thought that signature good at first. That menu was dated by using the tax information and logo's. If the menu date was not available it would not be so easy to show the discrepancy (10 years approx) between signing style and item signed (the menu)...

The more data - the better as far as I am concerned.  This diary can be identified as a potential problem working with the dates and information alone. I would never use one piece to define a puzzle, but to say dates are totally irrelevant...
