Just saw someone's recent Elvis post and thought I would add mine to a discussion.  This came directly from Perry Cox, obviously, a highly reputable source.  A COA from Perry as well.  I've always felt the signature (on a 5 x 7 magazine page) was a little too shaky, with stops-and-starts and it concerned me at the time. However, given Perry's confidence and assurance, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to purchase it. I remember that Perry had explained to me, at that time, that Elvis went through some periods of being in an "altered state" and that could possibly explain it's shakiness.  Just wanted to see if any of you with more experience than I in this area than I had any opinions on this. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you...

"... it is my confidence that will make the decision which is exactly what happened.."

But you said "...I agree, I was greatly concerned, but Perry's reputation is what swayed me...". I can't follow this. Good luck with whatever you do :)

I know what I would do. Use that high falutin LOA and sell that puppy. Then find myself a better example. But....that's just me.

You are having it examined by scan in this case? That is not the same as an in hand determination. When is the last time you saw it unframed?

Elvis was a generous signer so there are many autographs out there but like I replied before, Sonny West, a friend of Elvis and his Bodyguard told me that he and other members of his entourage called the "Memphis Mafia" used to sign his Checks. Also, Elvis had a very easy signature to copy.

It concerned me the OP was unaware of this. I know nothing of Elvis, but I knew that. More study by the OP may be needed.

Rfitzz, I know what you mean about a bidding war. I once had the opportunity to buy a designer sketch of Elvis's leather outfit from the 1968 Singer Special by the designer himself Bill Belew.

17 years ago, when I framed it !

Eric, I don't know why my reply didn't go directly to your question but, yes, 17 years ago.  I'm not sure what you mean by the OP was unaware of this. I simply took a photo of it in it's frame.  Of course, for thorough examination, I wanted to send high resolution scans of the item.

"...I'm not sure what you mean by the OP was unaware of this..."

Because you, the OP, said just a few days ago "...I wasn't aware of that..." with regard to checks from Graceland Auctions being signed by Vernon or staff? I am just trying to keep up with this. A high resolution scan should not result in a final determination IMO - it is more like a quick opinion to me. In hand examination is needed for proper evaluation as far as I am concerned, but that's me.

Use and acceptance are different. So his recent reevaluation was made from a scan alone, after not seeing it for 17 years? Can you post this scan here? I don't think any cert should be issued from a scan alone w/o regard to value - perhaps I am alone in this thinking.

you are not alone ;)

You bring up a good point and who are these people issuing certs via "scan through email?"

As far as I know, if I were to get something certed by Epperson, I would have to send the item to him for in hand inspection.

I would think the major players also follow this procedure.

This might be a good question for Steve Zarelli to comment on.

I must admit, I don't know much about the certing process as I don't use them.
