On reflection, I guess the deeper question is this:  can you really fake a Beckett hologram and a Beckett paper COA and get your numbers verified on the Beckett website?  How is that possible?

You could create duplicates of the hologram and COA but it would be very hard to duplicate the hologram well. You would have to hack their system to possibly get fake ones into their database. Is that what you want to know?

Hi Steve, Ballroom has informed me that forgers on ebay are using previously-issued cert numbers on their forged photos.  This is apparently possible because Beckett verification on their website does not show the item verified.  That leaves the question of how they are manufacturing the fake hologram and fake paper cert that comes with their forgery.  That was my question.

In some cases they may remove a sticker from a genuine BAS, PSA or JSA authenticated autograph where possible, and use the COA. Then resend the original in as a new submission.

In other case they may have holographic stickers printed that look like the TPA's. They won't have the same security features as high-security stickers made for that TPA but they can look almost identical, depending on the quality of the sticker and printing, and counterfeiter's design. Some look great and some are easy to tell.

The COAs are not hard to counterfeit—it's just copying the design and using the same kind of paper. There are usually no high-security features except for the stickers on them, when they have them, generally printed with the same number as the one on the autographed item. LOAs usually have photos of the item, which may or may not be in the database record. If they are the fake item will generally be a copy of the real thing unless the seller is looking to new collectors who don't know to check the database.

Thanks Steve, apparently not as hard as I thought.

Certain types of fraud are easy.  Take an authentic item, forge similar items, and add fake stickers with the authentic item's #.

Holograms can be made to order, and I suspect there are shady people who would create fake Beckett (or any) stickers.
