I think Gary Cooper changed his writing style of the G over the years. I have this signed card from 1928 and I think it looks more like an upper-case G.

Interesting.
I don't recall seeing exemplars of Cooper using what we would usually identify as a classic upper-case "G". Perhaps others have.
As far as Gable, didn't he usually sign legal documents (contracts, checks, etc.) with the upper-case "G" & lower-case for autographs? Here's a release granting rights for the use of his reproduced signature where he uses the upper-case "G" for the legalize and the lower-case "g" for what he wants to be reproduced:
