Authenticity is Everything
IS THIS A AUTHENTIC MONROE SIGNATURE?
Bought at a little wednesday night auction a few months ago. i have looked and probably 100 sites to try to tell but now i'm really confused. had one guy in uk say looks good and for a fee can send authentication. but here he doesnt know what he is talking about. would like another opinion before i spend $$ to have it psa dna. thanks for your time..

I'm with you. Lots of quirks, most of which I've never seen before in any MM signatures, from the beginning to the end of her career. There was a period where her signature could be characterized as erratic, but common features were still evident. I see a paucity of commonalities here, in relation to other MM sigs of all periods. Also worth noting is that there seems to be pressure changes in the signing. Ranging from, in musical terms, piano to forte. Typically, her handwriting is light and airy, like a gentle breeze is blowing the implement across the medium.

To be honest I think I'd save the authentication fee unless you need a negative response to get a refund from the auctioneer. I am 99.9% certain that this is some kind of deliberate fake. I say fake rather than secretarial because considerable effort seems to have been put in to making it look real (e.g. the lettering in the inscription) and I've seen other dubious signatures on this lovely Beaton photograph before.
