Judy Garland 1956 Palace Portrait Signed to David Bines, Palace Lightning Director

Hi All,

Here is something rather special. It is a double weight 8" x 10" glossy print of the photograph used for the Playbill and Program from her second Palace engagement. Dedicated and inscribed to David Bines, Lighting Director of the Palace. I am thrilled to have such a personal piece connected to her most famous concerts apart from Carnegie Hall 1961. It is very hard to photograph (I need a scanner), and much better in terms of contrast and appearance in hand. I was willing to be a little less picky on the signature/ink considering the superb content. Also shown is a really clean example of the 1956 Program. Beneath that is an original 1954 color tinted A Star is Born still showing the proposal scene not used in the original film.

It reads

"David dear,

Thank you for helping to make the palace such a beautiful home for me.

Love, Judy"

It's a good thing I bought the Playbill because I just finished reading the Program and there isn't any mention of David Bines!

I wonder if it was the photo surface that didn't lend itself to a ballpoint pen or if the pen was of inferior quality. Or maybe Judy used a fountain pen and the ink didn't adhere to the surface as well as it should have.

Not a ballpoint. Fountain. Adhesion problems are not unusual for this time period and with her light hand. The final vertical attempt in "David" might be a blue ball point, but the rest is fountain.
