Hi,

I purchased this autographed photo of Judy Garland off of Etsy and I wanted to get some opinions if it is authentic or not? The photograph itself is a sepia photo of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly from 1948 film "The Pirate." I am assuming that if this was really signed by Judy, it would be from the late 1940's. The seller listed it at a cheaper price because they were not 100% sure if it was Judy's signature or her secretary. However, the seller told me this story..

"My father had been contracted back in 1954 to do renovations to the original Leows Poli Theatre in Hartford, CT and in doing so, was offered a box of these very large 10" by 13" movie star photographs that were going to be thrown away, he took them home where they sat packed away and were handed down to me in 1979.

I believe it is her signature, and it is more than likely is, I am listing these photographs simply as what they are, old movie star photographs so as not to disappoint anyone. If the signature were to be authenticated, by some sort of expert on this subject, the value would increase leaps and bounds." - Etsy seller

The first two photographs are the autograph that I purchased. The last photo, is of a signature that I found from the 1940's of Judy's that looks kind of similar in the "J", the "Y" and the "G", so I posted it, so people can compare. Sorry, if it's a little blurry. Please tell me your opinions, if this looks legit or not.

That is not what I'd like to hear, even from such a scan. It says a LOT. Don't feel you must "settle" or something. Most of my Garlands were purchased for under $100-$150, albeit a few years ago. The 1954 was $68 shipped. Obviously this takes time and experience/skill, but Joe has a point. Keep looking is all I can say. Be prepared to wait. Last time I said that, "going to take months at least" - well, the item I was hired to find popped up in just a few hours! ;) Patience :)

After more research, and the fact that this is being offered by expert in the field, I'm convinced this is Judy, and she probably was impaired or rushed at the time. I'm not looking to turn this over for a profit, I just want something signed by her. Being that she is so often forged, and I'm not able to afford a perfect example of her hand, I'm happy with this at this point. Not that I have to defend my choice, I'm just putting that out there.

Then I hope you enjoy it. :) I am reminded of the saying repeated here from time to time "a good price fades, the quality remains". I am not fully convinced you would have had to spend a whole lot more for a stronger example, but you would have had to wait. Good luck Patricia :) 

Actually, after reading the study by Tricia Eaton, it explains in several areas the reason for the erratic example of her signature. I'm still proud to have it. If the opportunity ever arises I'll try to get another, but until then, I have a part of Judy.

  Hi All, I found this listing for Judy's 1950  Story of her life " album which is signed in the upper left corner and in the lower right is her pre-printed signature...It doesn't look right to me... any opinions? Thanking you in advance, G Garloo

I am sorry but do not believe this was signed by Judy. Judy's signature usually has a more rushed appearance than this one has.
