October 1st, 1955 The Honeymooners Classic 39 Begin! 70 Years of Laughter!

Starting with "TV or Not TV", this beloved and iconic series famously ran for just one season in this format, although it had been on the air since 1951 as a short sketch. The 30 minute format would end with this series, which aired its last episode on September 22, 1956. The characters would return sporadically until 1970, and there were the specials on the 1970's and the Lost Episodes of the 1980's, but nothing replaces those 39 half-hour shows on a small flickering black/blue/white TV with a pizza and your father on a Friday night...

Apart from some transitional breaks, it seems they have never been off the air since syndication in 1957. Very few programs have that distinction.

Of the 1950s shows, the two that endure over the generations are I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners.   Of course, many shows from the 1960s have never been off the air, but not so for the 1950s.  A few 1950s were "rediscovered" by syndication, but not to the popularity of Lucy or Jackie Gleason.

Thanks Scott. These truly were the golden days. I just found out my nieces and nephews never heard of the Honeymooners. :-(

I wonder if that has to do with the rise of the internet over network and syndicated television.  It used to be even in syndication programs were on at a set time and station. Today people watch stuff online, anywhere and anytime.

Of their choosing They don't go looking, nor is there a regular schedule that might contain things you don't necessarily want to see but will watch and be exposed to.
