No one scammed anyone.

An autograph not only has to be authentic, it has to be authenticatable.

Lots of autographs that were signed by the celebrity are not consistent enough with known authentic examples that a third party grader is willing/able to validate it.

The alternative is to mark everything as authentic and then where does that leave us.

As I see it, there are autographs that are definitely authentic, definitely not authentic, and then ones that are somewhere in the middle.  That middle group contains good forgeries and bad authentic examples.  To maintain the integrity of the authentication process those in the middle are (or should be) rejected.

I agree, but it doesn’t have to be pass or fail. A result of “Unable to render an opinion” is available for autographs that are somewhere in the middle.

It looks like they told him "questionable authenticity" which might be sort of the same.

I don't usually rely on third party authenticators' opinions if I buy things, but if I did I'd want to see "authentic". :)

It isn’t the same. When an item receives a result of Questionable Authenticity”, it’s stated on the letter that they’re of the opinion that the item isn’t authentic.

Hello, this is an 2026 update! lol I bought a copy of this book, and when i read this forum i started to feel a little bit worried about if this ringo starr autographed book was genuine, i sent to Beckett a photo of the autograph for a quick review and they said : Likely to pass full authentication! so, good news!

Update: I was able to get it authenticated thru PSA (no worries on authenticity) Sometimes these companies like to make things interesting.

shouldn't they take the provenance of the item into account?

In my opinion, no.

An autograph must stand on it's own.

As a practical matter, a signature in a known signed edition might be presumed to be real by collectors (barring known autopen issues), but once it is cut out of the book then it's on its own.
