Ronald Reagan- R R Auction Vintage Hollywood- Saul Goodman Collection

Calling all Ronald Reagan Autograph Experts!!!!!!

R.R Auction has a Ronald Reagan Autographed SP in its Vintage Hollywood Collection.

The inscription and signature on that photo, needs a bit of examination by members of our autograph community who collect Reagan.

I would be interested in hearing thoughts on its provenance and authenticity........

You're smarter than I look.
lol

Well then, it should be up to $10,000 by morning.

Can I cash a reality check? Goodman was NY in-person collector who didn't collect for resale as far as I know. No, I am not an expert, but it just makes sense to me that some are going to look like they weren't signed flat on a stable surface. But look at the collection, as a whole, and tell me it's likely this piece was not signed by Reagan and why.

As inexperienced as I am, this feels like it was signed by Reagan.

OK...feel free to go back to picking the Reagan and R&R apart all you want.

At intermission, enjoy these Reagans and Kennedys at Coach's Corner.

Steve...

Like you said "THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE".
The Truth is in the Bill White Study on the RR Website.

The Truth is In John Reznikoff's Reagan Video Study on University Archives

and Herman's Pen and Quill article.

And the Truth is the signature on that photo does not match any of the authentic exemplars in the above studies.

You can ignore that fact all you want, and bring up Coach's Corner, but the facts will always prevail

I gave you my opinion.  I believe it is authentic. My 1985 study on Ronald Reagan autographs was referred to in both Edmund Morris's "Dutch" and "Reagan: A Life in Letters," both published while Reagan was alive and both published with his knowledge and approval. You believe the signed photograph is not authentic because it does not look like any authentic Reagan signatures you've seen. You want me to take apart the Reagan SP inscribed to Saul, letter by letter. OK.  Let's start with the first letter penned by Ronald Reagan. The unique formation of the upper case "T" in "To"matches the formation of the upper case "T" in the authentic Reagan letter illustrated in both my 1985 study and John's Reagan Video. Bob, can you show me handwriting of  anyone else with a similarly formed upper case "T"?

Goodman Reagan "T"

Reznikoff Authentic Reagan "T"

Hi Herman ...

Thanks for coming back.

The differences in the upper case "T" shown above seem pretty obvious to me

The Goodman "T" fish shape top does not sit atop the downstroke of the lower portion of the "T". The downstroke tick of the Goodman"T" ends going to the right, whereas the downstroke tick of the Authentic Reagan from John's Video ends going to the left.

Please post a picture from your 1985 study if you can.

Thanks

Herman

Here is another "T" from an authentic Reagan that also shows the same exact characteristics that are shownin john video

Hi Bob!

This, I believe, is what can be called "killing two 'birds' with one stone," the two birds being the "non-authentic" 'bird' and the "high price" 'bird.'

In April 2010, R&R sold a Reagan 8x10 for $2,988. It was described by R&R as "signed and inscribed in black ink “To Mom & Pop, with Love, Dutch.” In very good condition, with some scattered light silvering and foxing to image and background, a light scratch across Reagan’s nose, and a small hole to top left border (easily matted out)."

If you go to http://static.rrauction.com/content/images/larger/3210/3210671.jpg

you can see the image. The formation of the "To" in "To Mom & Pop" in the inscription matches the one presently offered by R&R. The slant of the three line inscription on each photo is similar.

The "L" in "Luck" on the Reagan currently being offered by R&R is formed exactly the same way as the "L" in "Love" on the $2988 Reagan photo. The ending strokes of the "l" in "Saul" and the "k" in "Luck" are identical. Some letter formations appear cramped but it must be remembered that the current SP was signed in person for Saul Goodman, most probably standing up which can affect spacing between letters. There are  more similarities, but I do not have the time to point them out right now; I have much to do here at University Archives, but I felt it was important to set the record straight about the Reagan SP.  Both photographs were undoubtedly signed by the same person. And that person was Ronald Reagan.

The $2988 signed 8x10 was presented to Lydia & Pete MacArthur. It was Pete MacArthur who gave Reagan his first job as a radio sports announcer. The photograph was in Lydia MacArthur's estate which I purchased, in person, for University Archives who consigned it to R&R.

Bob, you are personally invited to see our vast inventory of early signed Reagan items at University Archives in our Westport, Connecticut, offices. Just call ahead for an appointment.

Herman the down stroke on the T curves to the left as you are looking at it not the right as the goodmans does?
Louie, please remember Reagan was standing when he signed for Goodman. The slant of the end of the downstroke is a minor variation. Both "T"s are formed the same way.

HD, we don't really know what Reagan was doing (i.e. standing, jumping jacks, sitting... who knows as we weren't there) do we unless Saul kept meticuous notes.

Nonetheless, it is a "variation" as you note and something to take notice of even if it is, in the opinion, of some (and not others) to be an authentic inscribed to... although I suppose as long as Regan's name is authentic  ;-)

I am posting this photo as an example of how Saul Goodman used his portfolio as a flat surface for the celebrities to sign upon.
