Authenticity is Everything
Russell Crowe signed, handwritten speech presenting 2001 best editor Oscar award.
I'm new here, a minor collector interested in knowing the value of Russell Crowe's handwritten, brief speech before presenting the Best Editor award at the 2001 Oscars. He wrote it on a hotel note pad and signed it, "To Michael Love Russell 2001." I'm not interested in selling it. It's too meaningful to me. But I am curious what something like this is worth. A lot of what I see here are authentication questions and I apologize if value questions aren't appreciated on these forums.

I was not aware that the presenters wrote their own speeches. If this is authentic, it is a wonderful piece of Hollywood memorabilia. It could be worth as much as $1000, or whatever a collector would be willing to pay for it.

Thanks for the reply Mike. I've looked around and can't find something similar enough to compare it to. It's not an acceptance speech or important political speech or anything like that. I would have thought less than half that would be the most. I'm certainly going to protect it better than I have been!

I can't say it's Russell's autograph or handwriting for that matter. I do not know what his handwriting looks like. But if it's genuine you have an outstanding item and could be worth some big dollars to the right collector.
His acceptance speech for Best Actor that year would be worth a king's ransom!

Thanks for finding that Joe! He certainly learned his lines well. I didn't realize he won for Gladiator in 2001. I thought it was 2000, but that's when the film came out. I'm glad I checked in here. I'm going to put it somewhere safe for sure, and copy that link!

The more that I examine it, the more I like it. The autograph looks pretty typical to me, and the letters that were written in ink appear to compare very well to the letters that were written in pencil.

He signed it in early September 2001, months after the Oscars when he wrote the speech. Looking on ebay, Russell Crowe autographs on photos are in the $100 range but on a website called Hollywood Memorabilia, they're a lot more. On HM there are signed photos priced at $200 - $500. Do people pay that much or are the ebay prices more accurate? If a signed photo could go for that much then I can understand how a one-of-a-kind thing like mine would go for much more.

To be clear, I wouldn't sell it and I don't need it authenticated. I really am just curious what its value is. Ballpark amount is much more than I had thought. I appreciate the replies and especially the link to the video! I don't know why I hadn't thought to check that out.

It's a nice item. I don't think it would be worth quite a thousand, though. The fact that it's the speech it is (not his acceptance speech for winning an Oscar). Also the fact that it's not him giving a speech for someone else that won "best actress" or director, or some such thing. Still a cool item, though.

I am not the best at estimating autograph market values. If I like something I generally believe it's worth more than it sells for. With that said, the item is unique, it is easily verified to a major event, and it's the same year Russell wins the Oscar. I would say it's worth in the $500 plus range. It could sell for higher if a couple of Crowe fans want it badly.
An example, I owned a Julie Andrews thank-you note she sent to the owner of a famous Restaurant she frequented when she won her Oscar for Mary Poppins. It's a super nice item. It sold for around $350. I thought it was worth more of course!
Hope that gives you some idea of it's potential value.
