In 2018 Janet Jackson was awarded the 2018 Billboard Global Icon Award, becoming the first black woman to ever receive the prestigious award!  Billboard has only been handing out the award since 2011.   Nice going, Janet!

I know many Janet Jackson fans might ask the question, “So you’re just now discovering Janet Jackson?!”  Well no...and yes.  Yes, I listened to some Janet Jackson songs in the 80s and still more in the 90s always aware of the fact that she had some pretty good hits, and she was the the King of Pop’s younger sister.  But my attitude was always...well, Michael’s younger sister is doing pretty well for herself.

I did have appreciation for some of her hits like, “Escapade, Rhythm Nation, Nasty, Black Cat, What Have You Done for Me Lately, That’s the Way Love Goes,” and more.  But I still didn’t have the appreciation for her that she richly deserved in her own right.  After all to me, she wasn’t quite Madonna and she sort of lived in her big brother’s shadow.

It just didn’t dawn on me that she had actually made herself into one of the most influential and successful female pop artists of all-time.  I had never tallied things up to see where she stood in the history of  pop music.  So here’s the deal:  Janet Jackson has had 10 Billboard Hot 100 Number 1 hits!  Moreover, she has had a staggering 27 Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hits!  To put this in perspective, Madonna holds the record for the most Top 10 hits of any artist ever with 38.  So 27 places Janet Jackson very high in the rankings.  Janet Jackson is also the only artist ever to have 7 Top 5 hits on one album!!

While Madonna is rightfully dubbed the “Queen of Pop,” it seems fitting that Janet Jackson is also known as the “Empress of Pop.”  There is ample reason why Janet Jackson is today considered one of the most influential female music artists of all-time.  I was really appreciating Janet’s music last night as I listened to her music for about three straight hours!

It’s quite impressive that the same family can claim both the “King of Pop” and the “Empress of Pop”.

I’m not looking to get into any artist’s private life or perceived private life, just an appreciation for the great music he or she produced over many years.  Any Janet Jackson autograph collectors out there?

It's a shame that Janet is under appreciated. It's a shame she seems to be so heavily covered by Michael's larger than life shadow.

You’re absolutely right, Joe.  I too think Janet doesn’t get the amount of attention she otherwise would if she weren’t Michael’s younger sister.  Having an iconic brother has been both a blessing and a curse I suppose.  I knew she has been successful, but honestly, I didn’t really realize her success was quite as impressive as it actually has been.

Though Janet may legitimately be an icon, or certainly close to it, she does still trail her big brother in No. 1 hits, Top 10 hits, and the biggest category of all record sales.  I’m not sure where she ranks exactly in terms of record sales, but here are the Top 4 artists of all-time in terms of record sales:

1) The Beatles

2) Elvis Presley

3) Michael Jackson

4) Madonna

She was big when I was a kid.

How about Tiito

I don’t know much about Tito to be honest.  He was part of the Jackson 5.  I know that.

What about Jermaine jackson?

I think Jermaine’s a little bit more well-known than Tito because I think Jermaine put out some solo stuff of his own.  I need to refresh my memory.  Of course, when the Jackson 5 started, Michael was the lead singer, and Michael quickly became the focal point.  America quickly fell in love with the very young lead singer of the Jackson 5.  In America (and maybe other parts of the world too), Michael Jackson grew up right in front of our eyes.  Michael was six or seven years older than me, but I know that he quickly became America’s son.  People really loved the kid.  And then he rose to even more prominence (as in global icon) on his own as an adult.  So for some people, accusations against Michael are almost like accusations against their own son.  But we better not get into that anymore.
