Tom Brady is doing private signings through Tri-Star and Steiner. (See below).  I'm interesting in writing a post for Forbes where I cover sports memorabilia. I don't begrudge Brady, I suppose, though I'm a Jets fan.

Three questions, please.

Has anyone ever seen such a high cost for a star to sign your item?

Can anyone thinking of other stars at the peak of their fame and prowess signing?

Finally what do folks think of "private" signings? While half the fun is meeting your hero, if you have a prized possession, it's the only option.

P.S. The price of Brady inscriptions is as much as as the vast majority of autographs.

Outrageous prices for a current superstar and unless he wins another Super Bowl he will still be tied for most Super Bowl wins by a quarterback and last year's victory was a gift from Pete Carroll. In my opinion, you have to be crazy to pay these prices but it is obvious that a lot of people are crazy.

Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana won 4 Super bowls each and their autographs can be had at shows for less than a third of these prices and authenticated items for both of them can be had for less than a hundred dollars.

You can purchase an authenticated cut from every 500 home run hitter in the history of major league baseball with the exception of Babe Ruth for less than the flat rate for Brady. I'll take Jimmie Foxx and Mel Ott over Tom Brady at equivalent prices all day long. They have both been deceased for over 50 years.

However, to each his own. If you must have an illegible in person Brady autograph to make you happy, have at it. There will be plenty of takers.

These prices are peanuts, lunch money to the people who buy them.  Sports, music, Hollywood fans are the wealthiest people in the world. To pay $1000 to go to a personal event with Brady or many others is nothing to so many. It's getting to the event that is the hard part.

Prices will go up

Definitely to each his own. While I like Brady's talent, I would never spend that much on him. For an IP for Michael Jordan...yeah, I probably would pay that, but I think MJ is the greatest sports star in America in at least the last 40 years, although the best pure athlete in that time frame might be Bo Jackson.

I just paid $500 for a 1985 team-signed Royals World Champs baseball. And I would much rather have that. I think I got a decent price, probably about right, given the sigs are about a 7 and the ball is probably 8.5. A boldly signed one sold on eBay for $1000. But anyway...that's more local interest. Only HOF on it is George Brett, although Saberhagen won two Cy Young's and a WS MVP. Anyway, one can do a lo with $650 if you look around.

Congrats on KC ball, James.

Nice buy.

There are 2 sides to this...

Side 1: That is a ridiculous amount of money to pay someone to scribble on your item. Get off your high horse Mr. Brady.

Side 2: At least he's willing to do a signing, and he's decided for him to plop down and sign all your sh*t, it's going to cost you $650 per, and he doesn't want to see you, hear grown men cry telling him he is their hero, or shake your nasty hands.

Personally, I wouldn't pay $100 for his auto/photo/and lunch with him. BUT, if you are a die-hard Pats fan, (with enough disposable income), here's your chance!

So while I think it's an absurd price, (you might as well just buy a certified pack-pulled autograph, or look on eBay), there will be people who will pay it! You gotta pay the cost, to be the boss! So if you want a badass Tom Brady signed jersey hanging in your man cave, it's going to cost you 1k. It's not for everybody, but then again with athletes of his caliber, it's not supposed to be... If no one was paying for it, it wouldn't be priced that high... =)
