Best signed I ever saw. I used to take a group of my students to a spring training game each year. One year on the back fields, Tony stopped to sign, lined up all the kids and at the end asked to make sure that every got one. In all, he signed over 90 autographs for us.
I met him in California. Seven or eight years ago. He was doing a signing at a Ford dealership. It was in the middle of the winter. January or February. My then girlfriend, now wife was going out there for business and to visit friends, and I was going to accompany her and I heard Gwynn was going to be out there, so I brought my bat. I've gotten thousands of autographs in person, but for some reason I was shaking in my boots, because I idolized him and guys like Carew who were just some of the purest hitters I'd ever seen. I remember when I handed over my bat, gather, he's a left-hander and he signed it with such gusto and authority, and all I kept thinking, well this is going to be a really nice autograph and sure enough it was. Great guy. He died way too young. My only encounter with him.
