I had a chat with a Steiner rep today who informed me that all new items purchased from Steiner will have a new style of hologram that is numbered, and they are currently working on providing online access to that database for look up purposes.

I just ordered something from their one day sale today, so I will update when the item arrives with the new hologram.

If true, this is good news for the value of Steiner items moving forward.

that is good to hear, thanks for the update.  For the amount of $ they charge, they should have a video recording of every autograph (like Upper Deck's pencam)....http://www.upperdeck.com/customer-care/memorabilia-authenticity-pen...

Steiner had #'d holograms many years back, but not sure why they stopped using them.

Steiner game used had serial numbers years ago... I don't think the serial numbers extended to regular signed items, but I could be mistaken.

Correct, only the items that were also MLB authenticated had numbers, MLB authenticated some signings but certainly not all of them, seems like they were mostly used to authenticate signatures on game used stuff since they also authenticated the game used item.

They definitely had #'d holograms on non-game used items as well.  I'm not sure how long it lasted for.

Here's a David Cone signed ball and Walter Payton jersey.  Neither are game used.

Yes that's the style they used in the early 2000s before they switched to the credit card COAs. I don't think they kept a database of them though, they were just meant to identify which cert matched the hologram, which is pretty pointless in terms of protecting them from being faked and ultimately why they probably did away with them.

Thanks for the update, Mike. This is good news, but I can't help but wonder now if it means the previous material with the un-numbered holograms will take a hit.

I bet they will, Steve.

Here is their new style hologram:
