Who the heck is Mickey Mantl?

If it were not for the PSA/DNA seal of approval I'd be worried?

Any thoughts?

Just curious how often he would sign like this?

I'm sure PSA has the exemplars.

Would he just not finish off the "e" when rushed?

Any help would be welcome.

Here's another Great authentic example of an authentic Mantle with the slightly smaller "E" in the Mantle...mind you not certified but you better believe...this piece is right as rain...

Sold for I think ruffly $153 at auction....I missed out...I was on the watch but totally forgot when it was ending...who ever got it got a great piece and a great price...I wasn't able to feed my obsessive Mantle hoarding...LOL

Not everything PSA certifies is A-O.K.  I have some Photo Autographs I sent out to PSA and they certified a couple of laser copies and some authentic ones, too, as I did further checking into them.  Sooo.. as I have always commented here, no one is infallible about making these judgements no matter who they are.  Always beware of where you buy your autographs from and who you buy them from.  That's my best bet.  And if this "Mantle" is from someone you believe is worthy of trust, you didn't need to send it to PSA.  Some self searching out of sources usually does the trick.  Everyone has their opinions.  They are rarely unanimous.  I do like and recommend The New "SANDERS AUTOGRAPH PRICE GUIDE".  But that is about it.  Always do your own research, first.  Then ok.. Send it to PSA, if you really want that "seal".. But it isn't God's Seal.  Always remember that.

Yup and they both have beautiful "SEALS", too...But guess what?  They are LASER COPIES only.  So if people wanna send something to an authenticator to get a "feel good" reason to know something is authentic?  Guess what, folks?  Not a good reason to do it.  I always say: "Know Your Source for Autgraphs.  Do your own homework, first".  ;-)

Very good advice. None of my Mantles have third party COAs but they are as good as gold. Why pay an extra $100 for an opinion if you know they are good? PSA and JSA have made their share of mistakes and I would not base a buying decision SOLELY on their COA.

 

But, if I am comfortable with it plus it comes with a PSA/JSA COA, it's nice to have the second opinion.

Exact-o!  You hit it on the head.  They can be a good source but just "another" good source to be able to pad "an" opinion of a good source's or sellers autographs a person buys from.  But that's all.  If we make them up to be like "gods" then that will not be a wise way to go in this hobby.  It's like making The President of The U.S.A. the sole decision maker without the need of Congress just because he "got into the Office".. I don't think that would be wise, as we all may be aware, either.. likewise with this hobby.  It requires our personal homework, effort and personal responsibility on who we are buying from.  I have made many mistakes early on and now I know that hopefully, at least 99% of my 400 photo autographs are like gold as well.  But in the end, it's a "hobby" that we all collectively can gather around and share and support each other in.  ;-)

Amen Robert...Amen...Spoken like a true collector right here...every one has made many mistakes early on...we all have...i have gotten burned just like the next guy and spent a substantial amount of cash that the crooks got me for on some forgeries early on when the forgeries were being pumped into the market at an all time high in the 90's...but research, education and this great site of collectors giving there honest answers and opinions on there personal experiences has something to offer all collectors of all levels that we all can learn from...Just like my man Chris Williams always says "A PIECE OF PAPER DOSE'NT MEAN ITS AUTHENTIC"...yes sir...true story...

just to add some of my Mantles with no certs as well to prove being educated on what your buying doesn't need a second opinion...although Mr.Zipper makes a great point of course "its nice to have a second opinion" absolutely...

I was just explaining this on another link.  These guys makes lots of mistakes. Putting their sticker on a preprint is just lazy.

I didn't want to share any distrust of them.  Rather, the point was that getting into this hobby one needs to know his/her resources as best as PSA and any other authenticators know theirs, if not better.  It is great to have something authenticated as an "extra eye" of certainty, but not the "only eye".  We just need to get to know good, honest and trustworthy sellers.  I sure as heck would never afford sending 400 autographs to be certed for 20.00 bucks a shot.  lol..  Though I have actually bought a Vintage "Sonja Henie" with a PSA seal only because it happened to come that way from my source.
