Mayberry R. F. D. is despised by many Andy Griffith fans, which is too bad I think.  Just like many will not watch color episodes.  I myself love the whole series and really like Mayberry R. F. D. although not to the same degree of course.  You cannot really compare the two shows since they have different dynamics.  I always liked Howard and Goober so that may be one reason I am kinder to the show.  Howard and Goober actually are the comic elements with Paul Hartman's Emmett Clark filling in also.  Aunt Bee has a few good episodes including a two part ship romance with Will Geer.  Andy Griffith appears in five episodes.  Aneta Corsaut appears in two and Don Knotts in one.   The listing of actors on imdb lists Alice Ghostly as being in only two episodes I know that is not correct.  Many characters from the Griffith Show show up in the spinoff including: Clara Edwards (Hope Summers), Reverend Tucker (William Keene), Martha Clark (Mary Lansing),Elmo (Vince Barnett),  George Cisar (Cyrus Tankersley), and Myrtle (Maudie Prickett).  Ken Berry (much like Jack Burns with Don Knotts) had the impossible task of trying to take over as the star from Andy Griffith.  Buddy Foster takes over a role similar to Opie, and his real life sister Jodie Foster appears in two episodes.

I remember watching the show when it first aired and I was disappointed that Andy was not on more.  In later years I have grown to appreciate the show for its own merits not in comparison to the original.  The first season is out on dvd but like so many they may not produce anymore.  There were 78 episodes over three years and in my opinion by far it is superior to what they call comedy today.  I decided to post this here and hope people will post autographs of only those who did not appear on TAGS.  That way it is less confusing.

KAY KUTER (1925-2003) is best known for his reoccuring role as farmer Newt Kiley on both Petticoat Junction and Green Acres. Kuter did scores of television programs including: The Jack Benny Program, Here's Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie, The Outer Limits, Mr. Ed, Matlock, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.    He did lots of westerns: Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Zorro, The Legend of Wyatt Earp and The Wild, Wild West. In movies he was "Calvin" in Guys and Dolls, and the priest in one of my favorite cheesey horror movies The Mole People in 1956.  He was on one episode of Mayberry R. F. D. entitled "Millie's Egg Farm."  This is an 8x10 of Kuter as "Newt Kiley"

it was a good quality show as well! it was cancelled before it peaked as well.

Thanks Robert you are right it was a quality show.  It fell victim of the CBS rural purge, when as Pat Buttram quipped "They cancelled every show with a tree in it including Lassie."  I think the chemistry between George Lindsay and Jack Dodson was so good the show is worth watching for that alone.  I hope that a company will put out the last two seasons on dvd.

RIP KEN BERRY (1933-2018) best known as Capt. Wilton Parmenter on F-Troop, Sam Jones on TAGS and Mayberry R. F. D.  and Vinton Harper on Mama's Family died on December 1, 2018.  His former wife Jackie Joseph also appeared on TAGS.

Oh :( RIP Just saw him last night on TV.
