After collecting signed photos for several years, I began to notice a difference in the quality of autographs I received on matte photos vs. glossy ones. I noticed that glossy photos allowed the markers or paint pens I was using to catch the photo surface a lot better, which prevented or reduced the streaking effect I got on glossy photos. The speed at which a celebrity or athlete signs has a lot to do with it, but the matte surface always seems to produce better results for me. Anyway, the purpose of this discussion is to get input from other collectors as to your own experiences with each type of photo.

I find that I have better results with glossy photos than with matte photos.
What kind of pens/markers do you use?
I usually get all of my photos printed glossy at Wal-Mart and I have not had any problems with paint pens drying. But sometimes you have a celebrity or something come up and you don't want to wait for processing or pay the extra for the one hour. You usually grab some photo paper and print your own.

Okay so here is the deal I have some pictures that I printed and it was the correct settings for the printer and the paper and they came back through the mail from celebrities and they used a silver paint pen and the ink/paint has yet to dry. I have asked several people about this and they said just set them out and let all of the moisture evaporate from the paint andthey will eventually dry. Well it has been weeks and they are still wet so what is the deal with that because you would think eventually they would dry out and I have even tried a blow dryer on a low warm setting and it didn't help.

So I have decided if I print anything and it's glossy I am asking them to sign with nothing but a black sharpy. But I am actuallt trying the matte finish paper and seeing how I like it. I mean the picture isn't as bright and colorful but it still does the job. I have yet to get one of those back but I guess I will see.

So has anyone else had pictures come back that wouldn't dry and or it took a very long time?
I like glossy photos when I have a choice but only with Sharpies or paint pens. I have used a Vis-a-ve on them and if it is in blue they tend to fade over time more than my sharpie photos. The Black color holds up well but does not POP on the picture as nice though. Silver Sharpies tend to streak on glossy but again that does depend on if your celebrity is taking his time or just scribbling something down. I have noticed though a matte photo is alot easier to get stray marks off than a glossy . From my experience the glossy photos sometimes get scratched and you can tell that something has been done to the photo. The Matte photos stray marks come right off without scratching or leaving any signs of an eraser. Hope this helps until next time KEEP GRAPHIN!!!!!!!!!
