Robin McLaurin Williams (Chicago, July 21, 1951 – Paradise Cay, August 11, 2014) was an American actor, comedian and voice actor. He had a theatrical background and gained television popularity in the late seventies and early eighties, playing the alien Mork in the television series Mork & Mindy (1978-1982). Subsequently, between the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 2000s, he reached the pinnacle of success as a protagonist with brilliant roles in numerous films which led him to be defined as an «interpreter with overflowing and withering comedy», but also as an «actor intense and measured in less entertaining roles." Nominated for an Oscar for his performances as Adrian Cronauer in Barry Levinson's Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Professor John Keating in Peter Weir's Dead Poets Society (1989) and Henry Parry Sagan in The Fisher King ( 1991) by Terry Gilliam, he finally won the statuette in 1998 for the role of psychologist Sean McGuire in Will Hunting, filmed the previous year alongside Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, directed by Gus Van Sant. Williams was especially the protagonist of family films, from the adventurous Hook (1991) and Jumanji (1995) to the ironic but also dramatic comedies Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) and Patch Adams (1998); but also of the thrillers One Hour Photo and Insomnia, both from 2002. While maintaining his ability to adapt to many roles intact, in recent years he experienced the difficulty of being partly forgotten by the public and of not receiving the support of critics, returning dear to the general public by embodying the wax statue of President Theodore Roosevelt alongside Ben Stiller in the Night at the Museum trilogy. After overcoming some health problems over the years, Williams died by suicide on August 11, 2014 at the age of 63; some time later the autopsy revealed that the actor suffered from a serious neurodegenerative disease, which the doctors had not been able to correctly diagnose, instead speaking of depression. The latter, in fact, can be partially mimicked by some degenerative neuropathies, among other things, the specific dementia of Robin Williams can only be diagnosed at autopsy and the empirical diagnosis can only be performed in an advanced stage.
