You're asking great questions. Ones that remind members that have been around for a while just how confusing autograph collecting can be to less experienced collectors. And you're getting great advice in return.

Hi Steve,

I really appreciate you guys spending so much time helping a new guy out.  Over the years I've become pretty good at spotting fakes but Cobain has been difficult for me due to the lack of authentic autographs for comparison and his easily forged signature.  I wish I had found this site earlier :-)

Wow, this is a great reference Paul...thanks!

It seems that there are two Cobain signatures, cursive and printed.  The item in question does look very close to the printed versions from the link above (samples enclosed) but I am beginning to agree, not close enough.  The "T" is crossed too high, the K is a bit wobbly, and the U and R are not quite proportional.

Okay, so the eBay seller told me to contact the guy who issued the COA (Dave Davis) and I did and he responded.  He says...

"I acquired the bands signatures on the "Nevermind" LP in Chicago backstage at the Aragon Ballrom in 1993.

I also met the band two other times:

first at the Cabaret Metro in 1991 in Chicago and in Seattle at the Seattle Center Arena in 1994.

All three times I was backstage. I always brought numerous LP's and photos for Cobain, Grohl and Novoselic to sign."

So of course I asked if he had any photos taken of him with the band and he says...

"No, I never asked them to take a picture with me.

I seldom ask any celebrities for photos because I feel that asking them for their signatures is already pushing the envelope. I do not want any of them to get upset. You have to understand that asking Kurt, Dave and Krist  after just performing when they are already worked up and then asking them for their autographs is enough to ask.

I received my Master's degree in art-photography some 45+ years ago. I love taking photos. I hope my photography is appreciated by my customers.

My COA states that their signatures were acquired in person with a small photo of the acquired piece. I also state where and when the photo(s) were signed. The COA states that the signatures are guaranteed to be 100% authentic for life.

I hope this answers any questions you may have."

I've uploaded photos of other items that he says he has and is selling (3 here and 3 in another reply).  What do you guys think?

All 3 Kurt Cobain you posted are not authentic.
All 3 Nirvana you just shared are not authentic.
And the Nirvana Nevermind is also not authentic.

Mike, it sounds like you are trying to talk yourself into this purchase. You want it to be real oh so bad that you will grasp at anything. We've all be there. Take my advice STOP and walk away. Put it out of your mind. They aren't real. Forgers will say anything and everything for a buck. Nirvana is rare and very easy to forge.

I am a huge collector of autographs and I love Nirvana, and I wouldn't touch their stuff with a ten foot pole unless the provenance was so amazing that it blew me away.

They really are at the top of the list of signatures that you can't trust and are very very tricky to verify.

Also, if you want some discussion look at "Nirvana BMP #2" the Kurt and Krist are done in the same exact hand. Compare the "K"s same angle same everything. Sorry man, I'd love a Nirvana signed item too but man they are not easy.
