Hello,

I found an American Heritage Dictionary of The English Language, copyright 1969. On the inside I found a hand written quote from The Cather in the Rye with a signature of J D Salinger.

Having looked online some parts of the signature look authentic but the penmanship it tidy unlike what I have found online, perhaps the penmanship was neater as the book might have been a gift?

Any thoughts??????

Hi Jennell,

I hate to say it, but that's not J.D. Salinger's writing or signature in my opinion. Here's a good example of his signature, on a bank check:

Thanks, his signatures are all over the map. I found an authenticated one on ebay and its different from the check, perhaps he took more time with the letter

Compare the neatness, degree of slant, and how high the large letters are in relation to the small ones in your dictionary compared to the check and letter.

I agree that's why I wanted someone else's opinion other than my own since I'm not a professional. It was so random finding that writing in the dictionary. I thought I should double check instead of recycle the book.
Thank you for your help!

Jennell,

I'm not a professional authenticator...just want to make sure you know.

It's always a good idea to double check. Other members may give their opinions in the next day or so. You may want to wait to hear what they have to say before you recycle it.

Sounds good! Thanks!

I haven't studied Salingers signature in depth and my opinion is based on whats presented here. I think the signature on the check and the second 1989 letter match up nicely. The first letter may be another style?

Hate to be pedantic, I believe you forgot the word "not" between "that's" and "J."

I did...thanks.

Janell,

I'm sorry. I meant to say it's not his writing, not that it is. I left out the word not. The writing in your dictionary has a degree of slant, uniformity and neatness that are not indicative of Salinger's writing. Plus the short height of the small letters compared to the tall letters are quite different than Salinger's. I apologize.

I know, one word off and someone has to jump on it. Some people, lol

No worries, I knew what you meant :)
