Hi all,

I've seen a John Lennon supposedly hand signed record cover. The cover is from the single Mother which when doing a bit of research was released in Dec 1970. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if they think the signature could be genuine or a fake. The signature also includes a little doodle of I take it John and Yoko. I have tried to match the signature to that of others of john from the 1970s and I have not found many signtures signed with just the J Lennon normally its the full John Lennon.Any possible help with this autograph I would very much be thankful.

In my opinion, a fraudulent bells & whistles signature, not real.

OK cheers for your help.  I wasn't to sure as I've never seen a Lennon signature signed J Lennon I've always just seen the full John Lennon signature. I don't know if john did ever just sign with a J?

It’s not genuine unfortunately although he did sign in a similar abbreviated style from the mid 70’s onwards.

OK thanks for the advice and for the knowledge that john did sign in a abbreviated style. Shame it's not a genuine signature. If you don't mind me asking what gives it away that it's not genuine as any advice for future reference would be very helpful thank you.

It’s just experience really, looking at signature after signature over a period of many years. I know it sounds like a ‘cop-out’ answer but it’s the truth.

For me particular give always are the word ‘love’, particularly the end and likewise the end of the actual signature, the formation of the letters is just wrong.

I’m sorry that my answer has probably left you none the wiser, that’s just the way it is. I am however very confident that this is a forgery, it’s not one where I am at all in doubt.

No not at all I value your opinion and I am very greatful to know that it is not a genuine John Lennon signature as I would be more gutted to buy it then find out then to be told in advanced. Many thanks for your help and advice.
