Here's something interesting I thought I'd share with you all. Some of you might have heard that the remaining members of Queen are making a Freddie Mercury biopic coming to theaters at the end of the year. This movie has been in the making for many years now and most queen fans assumed it would never actually leave the ground. But here it is. In discussing it with a few friends in the field both online and off, I have to agree the movie will provide new exposure to brand new fans and as someone else has so brilliantly put it: more exposure means new fans, new fans means higher demand, higher demand means higher value. I have to say I agree. This is actually something those of us in the queen collecting circle have been noticing over the last few months. Freddie's value has been growing recently and the movie isn't even out yet. For example, last year the going rate for a signed freddie on plain paper was about $400. Today, they are averaging about $550-$600 on plain paper. Last year, a fully signed album was worth about $1,200. Today they are averaging about $1,800/1,900 and growing quickly. Ive been collecting queen for about 40 years (yikes) and I can tell you this is not the same as usual yearly value growth. It's happening much quicker. Genuine Freddie autographs are spending less and less time sitting on sale. Last year it was common to see a freddie signed item for sale for a few days before it was scooped up. These days, we are seeing them being purchased within hours of being offered. Just a heads up for those of you interested in freddie signed items: now is the time to buy (safely). These autographs will be a great investment soon. Who knows how high the value will go this time next year.
As usual if anyone is considering a freddie or queen signed item, I'd be happy to offer my opinions and help.
All the best
JSD, not sure, sorry. I know there are a few silver signed box sets in circulation. That might have been what you were referring to. They're usually signed on one of the white LPs included in the set. I know one was up for sale a few weeks back but I dont recall if it sold or what it was being offered at price-wise.
Just curious as I'm on the look out for something fully signed myself....What do you think would be a good price for that album?
Mary, last year I would have said 1,100ish. Just about 2 weeks ago one of those signed box sets went for 2K. Looks like the going rate today for one is about 2K and going up. Signed albums right now are averaging about that much. A box set may go for even higher since it's one of those promo items that were numbered.
Thanks much! What do you think about the price for that Hot Space album?
No problem. Like I told goodcat, the BIN price for that item is too much today even with Freddie's value going up. Name deications make for a harder time reselling as most people view it as something that lowers the value. Considering it has both "happy birthday Karen" and "to Jimmy" on the front cover, it's not an item that will likely find tons of buyers at 1,500 either. At least not just yet. If you're looking for a signed item, I would usually suggest going for something that doesnt have any name dedications on it. You may not want to sell it now but if you ever decide to at some point, those types of items are very rarely anything that can be flipped for profit. Please dont feel too rushed to buy. I know it's hard when you read this post but I dont mean to send anyone into a buying frenzy. Never bend for lower quality items if possible.
Definitely taking my time to find the right item, I've been looking for a while now. Just trying to find that one item that grabs me you know. I love the hot space cover but not the dedications...at least not til they lower the price a bit lol!
Although keep in mind, anything Innuendo related or early Queen will usually run more. 3K+ at the moment
Mary - I have a signed programme by all four if interested?
Queen - Fully signed 1980's tour programme. Roger has signed twice! All have signed in biro and Roger again in silver.
£950 plus tracked and signed for shipping.
I might be interested Richard but is it all signed on one page or on different pages? I had a signed program from a local band a few years ago and had to slice the book up to display it for my girlfriend.
I understand. Yes, in most cases 70s freddie autographs go for more, however- because his 70s style signature was so sloppy and "simple", I never advise anyone to buy 70s freddie autographs that dont also include other members of the band. It's easy for forgers to get a sloppy 70s freddie down but much much harder for them to also include a good Brian roger and john. Late 80s and 90-91 freddie signatures are always valued higher as well since he signed much less and that was at the end of his life, of course. His late 80s hand has certain chatacterics that are very different from his other styles and are not easily forged. But with all autographs, I gotta say exercise caution. Nows the time to buy them up before the rush starts but dont panic purchase.
Thank you innuendo. I hope I can message you if I ever decide to buy a freddie for my mom. She sold hers to help out with some home remodeling since I'm expecting my first baby soon and I'd love to get her another someday. Thanks!
