I just pre-ordered 3 "pre-signed" copies of Clinton/Patterson's upcoming book "The President is Missing" from 2 different sources.

Realistically, what are the odds that I'm going to end up with autopens?

UPDATE:

To avoid the need to sort through all the photos in the comments, here's an example of each apparent Patterson autopen styles in this book:

1)

2)

3)

4)

5)

The Clinton signatures are still, at least in my opinion, up in the air, but I'm leaning toward good. If anyone else wants to chime in with their opinion...

Another seller has opted to change their description to reflect the Patterson autopen situation.

(Granted, they took the credit for noticing it, but at least their potential buyers will be informed.)

Thanks for sharing your detailed thoughts. Those same ideas have been going through my head. It doesn't make sense for the Clintons to be real when the Pattersons are fake, but all of the visual evidence shows that none of the Clinton signatures are exactly the same. I wanted to pick this up because I'm a Patterson fan first and I thought it would be cool to have a Patterson book with a president's signature. In other words, I don't know a darn thing about Clinton's autograph. All I know at this point is that they were all actually signed... by someone. If you're looking for a Clinton autograph, this is a pretty decent price for one if they turn out to be legit. However, the autopen issue with the Pattersons make it less desirable for sure.

As I mentioned, if heed was taken with regard to the fallout from the Hillary and Palin thing, it would make sense that the Clintons would be real, while Patterson would have no reason do the same.

Since they didn't use the same machine, and, if the Clintons were autopenned, it was on a machine far more advanced than the one used for the Pattersons, it means they were most likely done independently, which, as I mentioned, does increase the likelihood of the Clintons being good.

And if you want to buy, don't buy on eBay. Aside from a number of the sellers being apparent scumbags, there are still options to get it for list price + shipping.

This post definitely gave me some peace of mind.

I attended Clinton's talk about the book in Toronto last year - picked up a pair of tickets through a promotion and didn't have to pay, luckily. I was trying to negotiate with Deep Ocean Sky (the event organizers) for a VIP pass largely because I wanted one of these signed books. From what I understand, the signed copies that were given out there were signed "on-page", though Patterson wasn't at the Toronto event and I now presume he'd autopen'd those editions as well. I was almost going to bid on one of the signed copies on eBay last year, but decided against it. Glad I did.
