holly black i is doing signed this year but her book in not pictured cuz i saw on twitter she is
I was in my Barnes and Noble today and asked the lady about the signed books, she said she wasn't allowed to say which ones they got yet, but she did say not every store got a copy of every book on the list. She said she was pretty sure they were able to say which ones they were getting on Wednesday.
She said she knows which ones they got in already and they didn't get some of them that were on the list, so if anyone is planning to go stand in line call them the night before to check if they have the book you're going for. I'm guessing only bigger stores probably got some of the more rare books like Portman's book. Maybe if you can find an employee who doesn't care about the rules as much they might spill the beans early.
For those who plan to call: please be polite/friendly... this should really go without saying, but based on the level of aggressiveness I saw aimed at an indie bookstore recently over signed books, apparently some people need a reminder. I imagine there will be a lot of people hunting for just a few of these titles.
In years past, they've touted 100+ authors, and an average of 4,000-5,000 per author. I've been wrong so many times this year already about Portman signing, so I'm probably wrong again, but I still expect the number of signed Fables books to be well under that.
I'd have to travel to another city over to go to a B&N, so I won't be buying any of these, but I'm curious to see if they use special signed pages specifically for this. The Portmans (like the Carreys and the McConaugheys) were just blank tip-ins, but if they're going all out on this thing with 4,000+ copies, I wonder if they're going to print a special publisher tip-in (like the Seinfelds, Underwoods, etc.). Oddly, the last couple of years have included at least several titles where the author has to sit and sign stacks and stacks of books rather than tip-ins. Even pre-pandemic tip-ins seemed much easier, but especially now, I'd guess the vast majority will be presigned and then bound into the books... This presumably means authors are more willing to accommodate a larger volume because of the convenience?
What happened with the indie bookstore? I didn't hear about that.
And I agree hopefully people aren't going insane and fighting over some signed books. Besides you get further being polite than being rude anyway. The lady I talked to was really nice. I'm sure if I was a little more persistent she might have told me more after we had a nice convo about signed books. She seemed like she was going to drop some hints but I didn't want to hassle her or get her in trouble so I didn't ask... I'm just going to check back in a couple days. I'm sure if I was rude she wouldn't have told me anything.
I'm curious which ones they didn't get. She said previous years they've gotten copies of every signed book on the list, but this year not every store would get every book. If I find out anything I'll post it here.
Per their press release, this appears to be the full list:
Signed Editions 2020
Signed Editions – Fiction & Poetry
Signed Editions – Nonfiction
Signed Editions – Kids & Young Readers
Nice, anything you think worth getting?
Portman would be at the top of the list. Otherwise, it's mostly a shrug. I don't read much modern literature, so while I recognize names, I don't really know what's worth picking up there - although it seems like Ernest Cline (Ready Player Two) is a safe bet. Seinfeld and Cleese are probably worth picking up, and maybe Buttigieg depending on how you see his political future.
On the topic of music - the only one I'm really seeing on the list, unless I'm missing something, is Alley Brooke (Fifth Harmony).
Re: Musicians -
Jessie James Decker is Country
Jorma Taccone is from Lonely Island (so tangentially music)
Kristen Bell sings for movies (Frozen)
Bummer no Halsey and no Fox, and kind of surprised no Frampton based on how long that was available.
Re: Juan -
I think the most in-demand ones (due to general popularity, not literary greatness) will be:
Portman, Seinfeld, McConaughey, Fallon, Cline, Buttigeig, Rapinoe, Bell, Taccone?
But, a lot of the names on the list aren't exclusive to B&N or were available from B&N in the past including:
Cline - BN, Waterstones, lots of events (still available)
Portman - events, publishers promotion (print), indies
Seinfeld - BAM, WM, indies
McConaughey - virtually everywhere
Taccone - publisher promotion (print), events, indie bookstore in Berkeley
Rapinoe - BN, indies
Fallon - events, indie (Once Upon a Time Books)
Doyle - indies have an exclusive edition
Bell - events
Brett - indies
Anybody pick up any signed B&N books today? I got quite a few, all the ones I wanted were in stock.
Yep, I stopped at three local B&Ns! I was hoping for Natalie Portman, but no luck. However, I did get: Jimmy Fallon, Jerry Seinfeld, Matthew McConaughey, and Pete Buttigieg :)
I was there right when they opened and only 1 other person was waiting, so I was able to get Portman... I also got Seinfeld, McConaughey, Jeff Tweedy. I forgot about the Fallon till after I left I wouldn't have minded getting that... and I considered the Kristin Bell but decided not to get it since I had already spent quite a bit. Pretty good day for autographs though.
i was hoping for signed lili reinhart but i guess not
