Hello fellow autograph fans:
Just bought a book online (yeah, I know)... It (hopefully) has a personalized signature by "James Garner".
The reason why I am immediately dubious about the authenticity is that the photo in the ad is not that same as what I received (i.e. is the seller just signing/forging Garner's books every now an then and selling them?).
This is the photo from the original ad I purchased from (now taken down on the selling site):
This is a photo of the signing from the book I actually received:
Now, is it possible this seller had more than one of these signed books? Sure. But, I am wondering if anyone else out there has a signed copy of this book "The Garner Files" where they definitively know the provenance of?
I have seen in other threads where Jimbo has a number of different signature types and that others in his business circle supported him by signing for him (secretary, etc.). Also looking at the rest of the salutations for common writing traits, there are some good similarities. I am by no means an expert (obviously) but I do realize that signatures vary by time and when a bunch are rapidly signed at the same sitting. But, USUALLY he signs with the second letter of each name placed inside the first letter, such as this example which was basically verified by his daughter Gigi (he loved metallic pens!):
Or a variation such as this:
Here is only other example of one of his signature from my collection (came with an "authentication" doc):
Once again, we see the variation of the cross-over of the second letter and the first letter, this time just in "James" and only partial.
So, if you could please help me out with your opinions, I would greatly appreciate it. I am a long-time fan of Mr. Garner, especially as Rockford.
THANKS GUYS!

David: Thanks so much for taking the time to reply and provide an authentic example (what a nice item to have in your collection!). I agree with you, even considering possible variations, the likelihood of the signatures being legitimate is very, very low. Obviously my concerns were warranted. Thanks again and hope you have a good day!

I haven't studied Garner enough to know all his signature styles and secretarials, but others here may see this and comment.
A dealer could have legitimately made a mistake and sent you the wrong book, but it's not rare for a forgery seller to sell multiples. It's often noted in the listing.
Rather than look at just an autograph being offered by the dealer, the seller's other inventory is a good indication of whether they're fraudsters or not.
