I have a chance to buy a Maradona autograph from his time at Naples.

I'm having great difficulty finding genuine examples of his autograph, both for sale and sold..

Just how rare are genuine Maradona autographs, especially from his earlier days?

What should I expect to pay for a signed match programme?

It all depends but Maradona's autgraphs along with Messi are the most expensive ones you can buy in Argentina, the majority of them without COA.

I have seen the autograph of both celebrities with PSA/JSA certificiation sold in the US for USD 600 (each). Usually a jersey signed and some cases framed with the COA.

Thanks David,

I'm a bit surprised that a signed and authenticated jersey would sell for "only" around $600. I guess Maradona must have done some jersey-signing events in his later years.

There seem to be alot of "signed" trade cards floating about at very high prices. Are these actually signed? The signatures look printed to me but as they are invariably under plastic it is hard to tell.

You can post them. I'm not an autograph expert but I know the sig of Maradona.

The cheapest autograph (only a piece of paper may be priced on 500 (at least) or more without coa. Some othes may ask USD 10.000 in Argentina. Again I have seen better deals in the USA with a legitimation from DNA/PSA/JSA that will give you piece of mind.

Thanks again David. The autograph I'm looking act feels right to me, speaking as a seasoned autograph collector with little to no experience of looking at Maradona autographs. Your opinion would certainly be very welcome. You'll need to click on the image to see the autograph in full.

I don't like it!

Not good to me.

A characteristic of Maradona is that he never changed his signature in his life. Is almost the same when he started in Boca Juniors 'till the end of his life.

Expect some M  going slightly upward from left to right endins in a Z zig-zag going down at the end.

His real sig is full of 45 degree angles. Compare it to certified autographs and you will see.

In fact it's easy for any forger to do it.

Should this autograph be real you are in front of a rare bird.

Thanks David.

Could you point me to some sites with certified examples - both for sale and sold. I'd be very grateful indeed. Examples signed in-person "on the hoof" would be particularly useful.

I tend to be something of a calculated risk-taker when it comes to buying autographs but obviously I also have my limits, especially when the price asked is close to market levels.

I don't know of sites, but what I have seen on Ebay there were certified with PSA COA for around that price. Even for 1,000 USD I would say it's a bargain for a Jersey signed by Maradona or Messi.

Thanks David, looking at the completed items on eBay (US and UK) I'd say that any Maradona autographs with reliable authentication are rare birds indeed. I may have missed something but I saw no high-end completed items on eBay with Beckett, PSA or JSA COAs. I did find some high-end authenticated items by Googling these authenticators and Steiner Sports but nearly all of these were jerseys and probably signed while sitting at a table.

Thanks for the example David. To me it looks like it was written by a computer program. Far too neat with far too evenly spaced letters in Diego. It reminds me a litttle of the signatures I've seen on trade cards. I'm sure they must be digitally-produced.

I did manage to find a couple of "certified" signatures in the current eBay listings. The first is ceritfied by Beckett and the second by JSA. The sellers are certainly asking authenticated prices for them. I think these show that Maradona's signature can vary quite a lot depending on the surface and situation. Obviously the example I have been considering is a much more extreme case of variation, if real.

First is good a nice example, and the last the signature is not so steady. I have and eye on a sig like the second one but does not convince me.

Here's another in-person but signed later in life. It looks pretty horrible but I'm sure it's genuine:

Robert Sauders Autographs also has a later-in-life in-person that is almost as messy but I couldn't copy the image.
