The problem is getting at him to sign. If approached in a calm environment and being very polite your chances are good. At his last batch of concerts he went along the front row and signed autographs at the end of the shows. Of course if he is in a bad mood theres no chance (most people wouldn't want to either).

Thanks Ian. I've heard about his bad moods and everything but I'm more concerned about what you ask him to sign. Rumor goes that he was in a signing mood until he saw what it was he was being asked to sign. Lennon meant something to him and I guess he found it disrespectful

That indeed is the problem.  It took me 5 attempts to get his signature.  He kept telling me no because I was a 'professional', which I guess meant a seller.  Once he even took my LP in the car started to sign it, then gave it back to  me,  I finally got him, when again he told me no, went in the car, only to come back out and then sign my CD and record.  Very strange indeed.  I saw him at MSG in 2013 and he does sign after the show from the stage.  It is very quick though and you may get just an 'Elton'.

I got Sir Elton to sign my Yellow Brick Road LP in person last year... He's stopped the car for 4 of us waiting and rolled down the window. Signed eveything we wanted. So he must have been in very good mood. I even got personalized autograph as requested. Although I know he tends to be hard. My friend tried to get him 3 times before and he's always refused (well, not really, simply ignored him).

At each concert, right before the encores, Elton also signs stuff from the stage. If you have vinyl you can bet he will sign it (he might refuse signing tickets, sheets of paper etc.). Although only first 3-4 rows of people are allowed to come forward to the stage so if you are not in a front, it might be hard for you to pass your stuff for Elton to sign. Also keep in mind that these "on stage" autographs tends to be very rushed... Nothing compared to his in person signature.

I recently had a ticket stub signed by Elton at one of his shows. I found someone who was willing to do it for me (for a fee, of course) - and believe it or not, he did sign! Actually, I had to make a sign that said "Elton, Please sign this ticket for me, thank you" - He actually signed the sign first, read the message, and went ahead and signed the stub :-)

You might be asking yourself why this ticket stub? I was not at this show in 1989 (I didn't see him live until 1994). To explain this better, I am a big fan of his Sleeping with the Past album and I thought he did a great tour that supported it. This concert ticket stub is from the last night of the tour - New Haven October 18, 1989. This was a controversial show that was the subject of a few books about him. He basically went on stage 40 minutes late, played none of the new material, said that this was his last album, and he didn't comeback for any encores. The show ran for at least 90 minutes - one of the more recent shortest Elton John band shows to date. He was due to play Worcester after this show, but both nights at that venue were cancelled - making New Haven the final tour date for that year.

I wish I was able to find a full ticket, but I think I'm lucky enough to get a stub and a signature on it :-) Here's a photo of it. I think it looks great considering it's an on stage autograph.
