Muhammad Ali Autographs: 2009 and later examples are dramatically different

We left this post up but rewrote the title because it was defamatory. The author was so shocked by the change in Ali's signature in recent years that he assumed it was a forgery, but it is not.

The dealer sells material from a variety of sources, including respected licensed signings and third-party authenticators. The Ali autographs from PSA/DNA and Steiner are all or mostly all from witnessed signings.

It's also an important reminder to be careful not to make statements about others here that you're not sure are true.

and guess where i found this. on the right hand side with the facebook advertisements. which means this guy has enough money to advertise on facebook- it's not quite national television advert, but might as well be. every single person who may be willing to buy an autograph may see this ad and think this guy is legit... and he does seem to have SOME legit stuff, but this is awful... and eventually, someone will spend more than a grand on this!!!!

wanna talk about stopping forgeries.. how about labasting this guy???

Anybody out there who have actually purchased anything from Sports Memorabilia? If so, please register them at memreg.com and then we have real discussions about their authenticity and fraud. Otherwise, they can just remove the bad item from their website and and all we are left with the screen-shots of the item being offered to be sold, but no real evidence.

Just to clarify, there is no fraud. Even if something does turn out not to be genuine, there is only fraud on the part of the seller or authenticator if it's pretty clear they knew they were offering or authenticating forgeries as genuine.

I agree. That is why I am looking to document REAL transactions rather than rumors, opinions or accusations. We all know even the best of us can make a mistake. But we also know forgers usually create a "trend". (I could use another blind monkey example here, but will refrain...)

I thought this dealer only offered items obtained through well notorized private signings ( for most of the modern sports stars offered ) or offerd items with PSA/DNA, JSA, and/or Mounted Memories coas. Is that incorrect?

Mike, that looks like how Muhammad Ali has been signing the past couple of years or so. He did a signing in Arizona in fall 2009 like that, probably earlier too.

Thanks for your comments and apology to that company. I think what it reminds us most of all--be it collector or authenticator--is how careful everyone must be when authenticating. Whether your first impression is that an item is fake or genuine, make sure you confirm your gut feeling with evidence, and always think about your decisions and the words you use.
